Champion Notes: Lulu, The Fae Sorceress!

Lulu, The Fae Sorceress!

It is the most adorable champion in the League of Legends, LuluLulu is a support that comes with heavy harass and strong shields. Lulu is probably one of the best baiting champions in the game with her shield and ultimate making an easy kill turn into an impossible one. Her auto attacks hurt more than the average support and she can attack from angles other champions can only dream of. Such a high skill cap support takes practice to really learn but she is a powerful team fighter and can lane very well.

Champion Notes

• Glitterlance gives the full slow effect at lvl 1 and only increases the duration & damage as you level it.
• Whimsy is technically a Silence, but the opponent cannot auto attack at all while polymorhed. They may move at a slightly slower pace, but that is all. As such it is almost a stun and can be more useful than a similar silence from Soraka to save allies.
• Glitterlance is fired from both Pix and Lulu. As such, you can use her E to plant Pix in a new location (such as the enemy champion) and hit multiple champions easily. Or you can plant it on a minion and fire or on a teammate for the shield. This is a large part about why Lulu can attack from so many angles.
• Lulu's E grants vision for its duration, making it great for chasing opponents. Champions like Vayne cannot go invisible while affected by her E.
• Lulu has the best spoken lines in the game. Period. This is a fact, not an opinion!
• Lulu's passive bolts are fired from Pix and can be blocked by enemy units when traveling to target. You can get around this by using her E and auto attack while they are affected by it.
• Pix is usually located behind whoever he is currently following. If the enemy tries to run after being affected by Lulu's E, fire glitter lance forward.
• The damage on her Passive is surprising. At lvl 1, if all 3 bolts hit, it can grant an extra 15 damage on auto attacks. Any ally affected by Lulu's E, gains her passive and fires when her ally attacks instead of her. As such, champions with high attack speed can especially utilize it.
• Supports don't have a as much damage as other lanes, but possess large amounts of CC. As such, don't be afraid to try to gank a lane if the opportunity arises.
• Lulu's flexible play style makes her great with just about any AD in the game. Often times you will see improper pairings of supports with a certain AD (Caitlyn + Leona for example, Sona would generally be a better pick to make a poking bottom lane. Leona is an all-in type aggressive support not generally fitted for a poking AD like Caitlyn). Learning Lulu then makes for a great general support pick when you are unsure of your AD.
• Lulu's Ultimate grants bonus health to the target. This effect, combined with her shield, makes it very difficult to pick out a single target. Further, when the ultimate is activated, it causes a small knock-up on any enemy in the area. Some team compositions that go for AOE damage use her as a second initiate or to make a champion without a CC Initiate, like Shyvana, into one. The infamous "wombo combo" of Orianna and Shyvana could have Lulu added on for even more affect.
• Lulu is adorable.

Round-Up

Lulu is an extremely flexible support for team & lane compositions. She can be rather passive preventing damage through shields or she can be aggressive poking the enemy lane. Such flexibility is rare and makes her a great support for anyone looking to actually play support regularly. One aspect that makes her great for laning is her ultimate to help deal with highly aggressive lanes such as Taric/Graves. Bursting down an AD is not easy when a Lulu is on their team. If you want an adorable support that is incredibly useful in almost any situation, Lulu is your yordle.

Nice article Emeraldw, At the beginning I was a bit doubtful about the Champion Notes series but it really offers a good spotlight to champions and the opportunity to discuss about them.

Just a couple of notes:

Glitterlance gives the full slow effect at lvl 1 and only increases the duration & damage as you level it.

The slow durations increase with level (1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 seconds); still that's not a good reason at all to level up Q over E.

Lulu's ulti adds BONUS health, and so it's not considered a normal heal for the purposes of Ignite (in short, if you ulti a friendly target whilst it's Ignited, it still receives the full amount of health, because it's additional health, and not a heal).

The most adorable champion in LoL is not Lulu, it's a dead, rotten Teemo.

Spamming /l (or even better, keybind all the emotes for god's sake) with Lulu is insanely OP.

He mentions that duration increases with levels. I think what he means is slow percentage which is the same through all levels

Oh ty, I didn't got what he meant, my bad.

S'all good. I remember a time when you maxed Q first, but that's because it had better scaling.

Also add this:

Fact: Lulu is only matched by Ziggs for Best Yordle.

I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

Never. Lulu rules alone.

Lulu is definately my support of choice when I'm required to fulfill that role... I'm not a huge fan of all-in supports, who need to get in the face of the enemy and play riskily in order to capitalize on a situation... Hard CC's are nice and all, but i dislike needing to dive in... I guess that's just my playstyle, I've always enjoyed AD carries the most out of any role... I like to sit back, safely, emphasis of positioning etc... As such, supports such as Lulu, Sona, Zyra and Janna really fit in with my comfort zone... Because they're so fragile by nature and making an error actually costs more...

Recently I've started playing Tristana (After watching Double-Lift in a Ranked Team game during the pre-season) and just seeing how much he could dominate with her... That Leap reset... The slight buff to her DoT range helped I guess... But anyway, Since i started playing Tristana I've felt more inclined to trust my own judgements when it comes to positioning in a team-fight... She really allowed me to make that step from playing primarily ranged champions, to playing more in-your-face Melee supports... Such as Alistar, Taric, Leona and even Blitzcrank

I hope that S3 brings more viability to Melee AD carries, because positioning and timing is honestly a lot more important, because they need to get in to close range in order to unleash their damage... Melee AD carries are more risk/reward than ranged AD carries right now... But hopefully in S3 we'll see a slight change to those factors (Less risk/More reward due to item changes)... We've certainly seen a bit of change when it comes to Supports in S2... To begin with ranged supports were more preferred, but in my opinion I've seen a rather steep increase of Melee, all-in supports with ard CC, rather than sustain/shiedling... Perhaps it's the nerfs to Soraka and Janna...

Lulu is still my favourite for now because of my playstyle, but slowly I'm beginning to learn a more diverse range of supports and champions, increasing my pool... And It's all thanks to Tristana's early laning burst capabilities, you benefit from jumping onto the enemy, you benefit from going all-in, and that really helped me to develop as a player in general...

Sorry for the largely off-topic rant, but I just wanted to say, nice article, learnt a bit... And for other players out there who are trying to diversify their pool and currently prefer ranged supports... Lulu is awesome, very diverse, great champion... But if you want to increase your pool, try AD tristana and develop from there... not sure if it will help anyone else, but it sure helped me...

I think you bring up an excellent point that just can't get stressed enough by posts like this (not that I don't enjoy them, I think these champ notes are excellent) and that is learning all the aspects of the role. Solo lanes and junglers have it fairly easy since you are just going off the mechanics of your kit. Duo lane is different. You need to function as one and compliment each other. Just knowing the support or just knowing the carry isn't enough. You can't see the entire picture if you have one eye closed.

As mainly a support player I try my best to practice and get to know carries. This gives me a better understanding of what I should accomplish as a support when the time comes. Knowing this allows me to make better calls in lane and ensure my carry gets what he needs. If this means getting out of my comfort zone then so be it, I'm not gonna get better if I don't.

i applaud this comment.

Thanks for doing this. The only thing that I would have liked to see that you didn't include is how to play her in lane. As a support main, I've realized there are some very subtle, yet very significant differences in how you should build your support depending on matchups and what not. For Lulu, I could imagine some lanes where maxing Q, using mana regen runes, and going philo early would be really strong (like verse any non-sustain lane). In other types of situations, like say verse blitz graves or taric graves I could see one justifying maxing E or W and possibly starting boots.

Any other thoughts on customizations for her?

• #14 Emeraldw

I actually never lvl Q anymore. I use too, when Q did more damage, first for poking, but leveling E is much more flexible since it is damage and a great shield. When I realized that W was basically a Stun, I lvl that second. I only need lvl 1 Q to get what I need out of it.

Against Taric/Graves, blitz or leona, get HoG first. I see A LOT of support players that go for philo first when the real threat here is not poke (which regen helps counteract) but rather burst. And health stops that. Always keep vision of the enemy support in these cases as they start the action most of the time, not the AD.

Match-ups are indeed a big deal, remember what your AD is built for. Caitlyn is a poker and going all in against a full health graves is a bad idea. So you need to focus on poking till graves is lower when you could win a straight up fight. Thankfully Lulu works both with graves and Caitlyn. Either to provide poke or survivability for the all in.

Thank you! I've always been uncertain of guides that tell me to max Q, as I believe maxing E is much more versatile. And good call on the HoG, although soon it will have to be replaced by Ruby Sightstone.

• #19 ohGr

As Emerald pointed out, maxing Q was the thing to do on release of Lulu, cause it's base dmg and scaling was kinda stupid, and turned you into Lord of Poke. (Even more than Sona ever has been) Ah, the good old days of Lulu, when Rabadon's was part of core build because her ratios were so damn good. I miss those days, but I also don't miss AP Lulu mid, so it works out.

I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

Yeah guides really need to take Bayesian approaches... Actually, I think I'll make a forum post about this.
