Needlessly Large Rod now builds into three items: one that is focused on single target damage, a general purpose that is better for AOE damage, and a defensive item. The B.F. sword also only builds into three items: one that is best for single target damage, one that is general purpose and is better for your abilities, and one that is defensive.
Unlike AD Carry, where the Bloodthirster is hands down the best item and everyone should get it, AP carries one the whole have more flexibility and options. Rabadon’s is more affordable but a lot weaker than it previously was, and Deathfire Grasp changed significantly also, basically for the better. Zhonya’s stayed the same, but with penetration changes and the increased danger of AD bruisers, AD Casters, and both kinds of assassins, the need for it has increased.
If you’re getting owned, you can provide acceptable teamfight presence with an Abyssal Scepter and a Doran’s ring, or with an Athene’s and a Doran’s. But I’d like to make the argument you should start treating Needlessly Large Rod as a BF Sword, a big and necessary first step for you to really start taking your place in the game.
Previously, you could stack two Doran’s Rings and get your Absyall or Rylai’s and call it good, but Doran’s Ring is much worse now. There are three reasons for this. It has a worse-late game. It’s sell-price got nerfed to below 200. And we now have crystalline flask. And if you’re an Athene’s champ, you shouldn’t have to get Doran’s Rings at all. You can start with a flask and charm or with two charms and three pots and you’ll never need a Doran’s Ring again. You don’t have to get boots right away at mid anymore, and this makes it easier to farm. Ambient gold change means you will have more gold than you used to, because you are not a pro and you will miss cs. You have more gold than you used to, even at mid, even if you’re only missing 20-30% of your minions. Every single mage has at least one NLR item recommended. You will have the opportunity to recall the least in the early game. The best time to try to get a NLR is earlier. If you can’t, you can’t.
It is crazy to me that a mage would complete more than one item before getting a NLR item.
Here are all the completed AP items in order of price:
Doran’s Ring
Mejai’s Soulstealer
Shard of True Ice
Twin Shadows
Malady
Morellonomicon
Void Staff
Spirit of the Spectral Wraith
Banner of Command
Will of the Ancients
Nashor’s Tooth
Guinsoo’s Rageblade
Abyssal Scepter
Archangel’s Staff
Athene’s Holy Grail
Rod of Ages
Liandry’s Torment
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter
Lich Bane
Deathfire Grasp
Zhonya’s Hourglass
Rabadon’s Deathcap
Iceborne Gauntlet
Hextech Gunblade
Trinity Force
Here are all of them with the support-only, jungle-only, attack-speed, and hybrid items taken out, plus items you rarely buy (yes I know gunblade is on Akali and Kat, but very few mages actually use it):
Doran’s Ring
Twin Shadows
Void Staff
Will of the Ancients
Abyssal Scepter
Archangel’s Staff
Athene’s Holy Grail
Rod of Ages
Liandry’s Torment
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter
Lich Bane
Deathfire Grasp
Zhonya’s Hourglass
Rabadon’s Deathcap
These are your bread and butter AP items. The big case I make is this. The majority of the time, and mana’d AP-carries champions that are not Ryze, you will want to get an NLR item as one of your first two. Take a NLR item and one other item and it will almost always be better than two non NLR-items. Rod + Rylai’s? Not enough damage. Athene’s + Abyssal? Good defense, sustain, and penetration, but only 130 combined AP. Lich Bane? Archangel’s Staff? Finishing Revolver into WoTA? Rushing Liandry’s? No way. The best of these, Athene’s and Abyssal, can actually wait when you’re in solo queue. If you’re an Athene’s Champ, get 2 charms and a chalice first, then don’t rush the Athene’s. Try to get to the Needlessly Large Rod at least. It is at least half the cost of any complete item it is a part of. Too many times you’ll think “I could finish an item and start a new one” when you have that 1600 gold, then you recall 4 times in a row where you only have 435-600 gold. You could have got the NLR, then grabbed pieces, getting stronger every time instead of once and then having to stay stale until you can finally get one. Early game is when you have the strongest control over your ability to get that gold safely.
By contrast, the three NLR items are playmaker items. Once you get one of them, you will either get a huge increase in all damage, a huge increase in single-target damage, or the ability to make a bold play you couldn’t normally pull off every 90 seconds (less if you have Artificer).
With Rabadon’s being cheaper, they are as a whole more accessible than before, only a few hundred more gold than the items below them.
Again, I say: treat NLR as a BF Sword. Try to get one early. The hardest part is having 1600 gold when you go back to base. The easiest time to do this is early in the game.
Which do you get?
Generally, the rule is get a Rabadon’s. Get a Rabadon’s if you are poke champ or spam champ in any way, have mostly or all AOE, or have high ratios. Ziggs, Ahri, Zyra, Gragas, Karthus come to mind.
Some champion have combos. They blow everything at one time, or specialize in killing one or two then getting out, and then their sustained damage is not as good as farm champs. These champions tend to favor Deathfire Grasp. LeBlanc, Eve, Sion, and Annie are great DFG champs.
Other champion need Zhonya’s because they go all-in, are squishy, or both, and really need to not die. Morgana, Fiddlesticks, and Kennen are the most famous examples of Zhonya’s champs.
Lastly, some champions are flexible. Twisted Fate, Cassiopeia, Orianna, Annie, and Ahri are great examples of this. The great thing about them is that they can make use of two or more of these items depending on playstyle or to adapt their roles in the team.
Take Twisted Fate. Rabadon’s means his cards hit the entire team for more total damage, and scales all his items the more late-game it gets. DFG means he can burst down someone more quickly, great for ganks or for ensuring key targets get bursted down. DFG, stun, Q, Sheen or Lich Bane proc, Guardsman Bob’s your uncle. He can also go Zhonya’s to more safely go after someone. Perhaps they have lots of juking and defensive abilities and he can get most of the damage off, but not quite all, or perhaps they have great gap-closers and bursts and you can stun and damage, then Zhonya’s while your teammates cc or burst your would-be killer. Misaya once had a crazy play where he ulted next to the other team, used Zhonya’s, baited many of their ults, and then won the game.
Remember: a Needlessly Large Rod is the most expensive ingredient in the game. Getting it is hard. Getting it early is easier. Unless you’re Ryze, you will generally be gimped without getting a NLR item as one of your first two major items. If you can get it before finishing any items, that’s even better. The three NLR items should be considered as the core of your build: you should plan to get one first and make that the most important big item you get.

Also Akali and Kat need to rush NLR?

Posted 1/12/2013 11:09:06 AMIn a perfect game in which you can farm until 1600 gold without needing to recall, you are probably so far ahead that it doesn't really matter what do you buy. You're gonna pwn anyways.
Being forced to recall with less than 1600 gold and not buying anything is like having a sign to the enemy team that states: "hey, I just died, and this is crazy, but I'm exactly as weak as I was when it happened, so kill me again, maybe".

Posted 1/12/2013 5:46:17 AMActually, another reason to do so is that tier 3 item is significantly weaker than it was, so it is less silly to carry a NLR around not having it lvl up
However, I still think RoA champion keeps their path, they generally get Rabahan soon after that though.

Posted 1/11/2013 7:17:00 PMTwisted Fate flexible? This is not true at all. His entire build is one of the most static in the game. Some people argued that his build flexibility and variety could change in S3, however, we still see TF building the same exact items they built in S2.
That is not all, exactly those items got nerfed like Lich Bane and Rabadon's. In the case you fight people like LeBlanc and Kassadin alike, you still go for Abyssal and Merc treads, but out of all the new items, TF uses none. Only DFG is a possibility but since you now fight against the more common AD casters and you NEED a defensive item as TF, Zhonya's is even more of a must over DFG, leaving it as a last item to buy. Lich Bane is still not an item to rush, especially with the removal of MR, reduction in MS% and a 0.75 AP ratio. Since TF only has 2 reliable sources of DMG, Lich Bane is still a must only AFTER you buy Rabadon. The build for TF is the same as it was in S2: Sorc(Merc Treads), Rabadon, Lich Bane, Void Staff, Zhonya's and the rest is the only one of choice depending on their team (Banshee, DFG, Abyssal or WOTA only in case of double AP). Regarding GA it is still an awkward purchase since it gives no mana nor hp and has been nerfed in season 3.

Posted 1/11/2013 8:30:41 PMI don't think your points are right. I'll just show you the typical Misaya TF build order.
S2: Boots>Dorans>Dorans>Sorcs(Mercs)>Deathcap>Lichbane>Zhonyas.
Abyssal/Banshee's are viable items somewhere along this build if needed.
S3: Boots>Dorans>Dorans>Sorcs>Deathcap(DFG, if you feel you will get many ganking opportunities where you have to assassinate one person)>Deathcap(if not already built)>Lichbane>Zhonyas
You never rush zhonyas for defense, that's silly and it gimps your offense so hard you'll die just because you don't do enough damage, the only champions on which a zhonya's rush is acceptable are Morgana, Fiddlesticks, and Kennen.
If you're having early-mid problems with AD casters with TF, you're doing something wrong. I understand TF is a difficult champion. Keep practicing moving and general mechanics, you won't have any problems after a while. You can farm from 1410 range and kill an entire wave in 1 second flat, no AD caster can deal with TF's waveclear. Play safe for the first few levels, get blue, then push lane like no tomorrow and do what TF does best (gank) while the AD caster farms under his turret all day long.

Posted 1/12/2013 7:25:29 AMWell I have to disagree, and that is actually the point that I made about Zhonya's and TF's flexibility, Zhonya's is a late game item, and I've played TF from the very early levels to the point where I levelled to 30 by using practically only TF. And I'm sorry but AD casters and Burst Champions and Assassins alike always killed TF. In a match where there is a good TF and a good AD caster (bruisers too) TF will die. It's not only by personal experience but by watching tournaments, videos and featured streams with 2k+ elo players. I hardly ever see a TF pubstomp the match or being effective like a snowballed Katarina or Diana. Not only that but it is of common knowledge that TF loses to pretty much any matchup unless it's Heimer.
Also, I remember when he was used by Azubu Blaze and was shut down pretty hard, sure the player isn't Misaya, but he's still a pro player, and TF was forced to rush Abyssal for survivability despite fighting an Orianna. You're mistaken if you think they're not going to focus you if they see you're doing well, and unlike many other champions, TF has a really hard time making a comeback, unlike Darius, Diana and Katarina. This is due to his crap ratio and base damage too and having an ultimate that doesn't do damage. He needs a defensive item in his build, and in S3 earlier than a DFG atm.
P.S. Kha Zix and Talon's W would like to have a word with you about waveclearing. (Since they're currently used Mid more commonly now you know)

Posted 1/12/2013 6:27:16 PMYou can rush Zhonya on any champion if you feel the need. It gives incredible utility with a fair amount of AP. I wouldn't get it as a primary route, but it's active is so powerful, the AP is good for it's price, and armor can't be ever useless, starting from turret/neutral damage to the mandatory ADC bot, with many other options as bruisers and AD casters out there.

Posted 1/12/2013 10:52:24 PMWell, low-elo kha'zix players are just terrible, while kha'zix is permabanned in higher elo, so Kha'zix isn't a problem.
Talon, might be a bit annoying
Well I guess early zhonya could be good, haven't had the oppurtunity to play vs a threatening AD mid as TF, so I don't know
Yes, rushing abyssal for MR is always good when you're having trouble vs the enemy mid, but I'm not that sure about zhonya's
The thing is "pubstomping" with TF is different from pub-stomping with other champions. Watching Misaya's TF videos are a great example of TF pubstomping. No matter how fed he is, he will still never be able to 1v1 most champions or deal high damage in a short time. His strength comes from his 5500 range ultimate, which can devastate/counter the enemy's plays or make some good plays of your own.
Obviously, if the enemy's plays aren't going to be an issue, you can just spam snowball champions for wins

Posted 1/13/2013 1:19:35 PMYou're right, I've seen Misaya play too and it is true that TF is not know for his damage but for his mid game pressure. In fact he's the only Assassin that does not represent the definition of Assassin. The problem is if the enemy team knows what they're doing, most of the time TF's utility is diminished greatly. I know how TF works a lot and whenever I fight against a team vs TF I know how to move and what to not dare, and if I'm playing vs TF in the mid lane I choose an assassin or a burst champion to just kill him on the spot. I can tell when he's about to port and can warn the other team mates in advance. Problem is, not many people know how to play against TF, mainly in the lower elos which I have been. Never have I met a TF and I was the only one picking him.
Regardless of all this, it was the flexibility of his build, which is not true, his build is static, because he's either going to sacrifice much needed damage to just become a stun bot and even then it still depends on his team and the enemy's, some people just pick Noc and destroy TF. It's a champion that depends too much on the composition of both teams, pretty much like Karma.

Posted 1/11/2013 11:33:31 AMI'll make an argument specifically about Ahri. I'm a mid player, and furthermore i main Ahri, so this post is based on my personal experience and observation of pro players. I've heard several times from pros about how effective is rushing dorans on her. And it really is from my experience. While she's one of the few champs that really benefits from all of the 3 NLR items and while dorans sell price were nerfed i still find going for 2 dorans to be extremely effective. One of the reasons is Ahri needs alot of mana to clear waves. She's not as effective as Ori or Morg or Gragas etc., if you wanna make plays and leave your lane you gotta clear fast and you alot of mana to do that. While Ahri profits from getting some mana reg, she's not really a champ that benefits from anything bigger than doran's - neither chalice nor athene are of any good use to her. Say you've decided to go flask/pots and rush NLR 1st item. And you pull if off, but than the enemy jungler steals your blue. And you're playing vs a champ with good clear. Morgana comes up to lane uses pool and few autos clears and goes off, while you stay under your tower trying to stay even in cs. You've already lost the lane even if Morg doesnt pull off any ganks, she can farm her wraiths, deny you vision etc. Bottom line, dorans make up for a very self-sufficient lane, which i've found to be extremely valuable in solo q. You don't need any jungler attention, and indirectly are helping other lanes. Another thing about 2 dorans build is they let you make plays in your lane too. Generally to score off a kill mid with Ahri you not only need DMG and enough mana(and trust me you need alot of mana too, if you dont get any source of mana you can dump all your mana into harass, hit everything and have the enemy use some sustain/pots and ignore it all) but you also need some HP. Often times harass is not tradeless, and the more damage you want to apply in a trade the more you're likely to suffer some yourself. Often times getting the kill is more about how much HP you've got rather than how much DMG you have. Ex.: Your opponent has flash and stays near tower at 60% hp. You have ulti and ignite up but you know you cant finish him without tower dive and he also has ignite. So if you're bellow certain HP you can't really go ball's deep with ult cuz he'll ignite you, throw a spell or two and the tower's gona finish you off. Dorans just give Ahri everything she needs, and at about 2 dorans i've found she's enough self sufficient to clear/harass/trade/roam early on, all of which help make plays and snowball instead of continue to farmfest passively and hope for that good mid/late you've gotten yourself with your NLR.

what about catalyst for example: mana, health and later build options combined into one
or athenes, gives you the mana, the mr, which is EHP since most dmg will be magic and cdr as an extra bonus which isn't bad on ahri really/

Posted 1/11/2013 4:06:21 AMYou really don't think there are exceptions? Isn't Prioritizing Vamp on the manaless guys still a great call? (Double Wota with Double AP?)
With TF, my usual first item is Sheen, and I prioritize Lich Bane. (IMO, it's his core item) If I can make it back to base with 1600, after sheen, obviously get the rod. If you cant you are gonna have to build compromise items. (like revolver or Guise, which can get you back into the game mid game.)
