So, nobody is gonna call him on blatantly confusing Support with glorified Heal and Buff bots?
Well, it looks like Morello agrees with him: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=42449329#42449329
We want flexibility in the duo-lane role, but we think it's imperative to avoid making core support characters (defined as Sona, Janna, Soraka, Lulu, Nami and Taric) have a primary role in League. Since the roster's a bit smaller, though, we want occasional mage and tank members down there, but not at the cost of supports being there.
I just wanna make sure everyone noticed the lack of Leona in that list ;-) .
As for Morello, he spent a good part of the huge discussion in the Nami sneak peek explaining how supports shouldn't be limited to being pure healers because he finds it boring or whatever. Maybe they had started thinking about scaling utility already? What matters now since it's coming, is that they get it right hopefully.
@Runethane: you are giving LCS-tier statistics, so while i really appreciate your insight, that's not how things go in my league, and as i said earlier whatever i may say should be looked at solely in that context.
About some of your other points, i'm willing to trust Riot on giving scaling utility enough impact that it is actually a viable option. You said that a best option will rise and crowd out all others, but i doubt that. Right now in my typical mid morg game, i have a decently vast pool of items to pick from depending on how the game is going, allowing me to adapt and make meaningful choices. I'm not sure it was the case in S2, and Riot seems eager to give that possibility to all roles.
Isn't that why we got Statikk and Runaan in S3 (and i guess the new exec's calling was supposed to be an option too) ? Athene's filled the "endless mana regen" niche that Morellonomicon and AAS couldn't, there are 2 different highest AP items (zhonyas DFG) not counting Dcap (obv) and Mejai (risky)... bruisers and tanks have a wide choice of sunfires, visages, BVs, FHs, Icebornes, Mallets, Hexdrinkers etc to pick from. All of those item pool extensions required testing and sometimes brutal nerfing (mogs, BC) but the end result is a better game.
Opening up the support item pool and balancing it so that all options have their niche uses and stuff, should be quite the challenge considering the nearly complete lack of data Riot has to play with (all supports building basically the same items for no less than 2 seasons since sightstone counts as wards+HoG). But in the end we will have the options we need, have faith.
You are doing it on purpose now! First taking Morello's word down to the letter is a terrible, TERRIBLE idea. The guy is good when it comes to balance but he clearly lacks vision. The whole of S3 shows that we can't really trust their capacity to predict how the game will turn out.
Scaled Utility has been suggested since S3 Pre-season, of course at the time they found some bs reason to tell everyone it was a bad idea (SAME for Synergy and now they are doing it... lol). And now everyone is telling them that this amount of gold and designing support around having lot of gold will end up badly and I'm sure they will listen!...
Sorry to say, but at this point you are not only acting like a fanboy but also as a stubborn one at that. The first thing you could do is drop that Leona argument, Leona IS a support, the only thing you are proving by arguing otherwise is how wrong your definition of Support is. Then you should accept that the role exist and has always been around lack of gold, I know you want to see 1k Soraka's heals thanks to AP scaling, but this will either never happen or it will destroy the freaking game!
