The problem of melee carries is that they get butchered during the laning phase against a ranged adc and a support.
Theoretically the answer would be to allow melee carries to "dodge"/offset some of the harrass coming their way. I like the way Riposte works for that, although it would need a waaaay shorter cooldown and a waaayyy lower cost.
Skills like a lifesteal boost for a few seconds with a 5 seconds CD, or Riposte with a 5-6 seconds CD, or a immunity to Physical damage for 0.5 sec on a 5-6 sec CD. They could work I think. Plus they might help mADC survive in teamfight. -

I'm surprised I haven't seen more people playing Irelia. I've been having decent success with her in top lane because of her kit. She has many of the things mentioned in the article, regen from her w passive, auto attacks buffed with true damage from the W active, relatively low cooldowns with cdr on her core items ( stinger into zephyr) , true damage bypasses armor (semi-shred) and finally has excellent disengage/reengage from equilibrium strike and blade surge. On top of that, her base hp is The 7th highest in the game at 550, Jax and Garen being the only notable champs with higher.
