Well, I agree with you completely, but I would like to point out that for example the "Lower Elo Hell" is not only player's fault, but also Riot's fault. Let me explain.
There are a lot of people who after dinging 30 lvl and having about ~100 wins in Normals (pretty much the minimum to ding 30) instantly go to the Ranked games. However, they do not know that they will start with placement matches and that starting Elo is 1200 and can go to a negative value easily after that. So they fail themselves, their teammates, both who are just placing or those who are 1300 after lets say 400 ranked games, but no one can really blame them...
People are expecting to start at 0 when they are 0. They want an environment to train in. However, they don't want to be kicked out of it while training. I think most can agree that Ranked players are generally more skilled than Normal Q players, and need substantially less games to be decent. For example WoW's arena system. Everyone starts at 0. I know a lot of players who started PvPing with arenas, and no matter how terrible and unskilled they were they could not go below 0, but they will noticetheir improvements easily and they wont have this brick wall saying "placement matches and negative value rating". That I think is the most logical way to start any rating and ranking.
But current system is kinda terrible. First there are a lot of players who picked up LoL not because of friends, but because they want to try it out, but in this game other than friends there is no other in-game information that would tell you "Hey there, before you play your first Ranked game, we would like to inform you that they are more competitive and harder, require more skill and ability to adapt to multiple roles. Ranked mode has placement matches, losing or winning these is essential to have a positive Elo value".

Just had a game where 0/6/0 Garen was able to farm up for 3 black cleavers, eventually 5. He obliterated us stating that we all were unskilled noobs lol.

Well if Zyra was so horrible as you described she would never have a stable 60% win rate. Zyra has the same build route as Anivia and does plenty of damage late game due to low CDs. 3s CD on Q 7s CD on W (plant re-charge) and 6.5 sec CD on E. Not to mention that ulti is available every 55 seconds or so.

Orianna has terrible early-game due to:
- Great mana-hunger
- Easily ganked, no escapes, no stuns or snares prior level 6
- Forced to go glass-cannon in order to transition into the mid-game to do some damage (unlike Anivia or Zyra, who are allowed to Build RoA => Deathcap, and are tanky)
- Team reliant (needs a tank with good initiation to follow up with a good ultimate)
- Only soft CC available at all times (assuming ultimate is on a CD)
Morgana has terrible transition from mid to late-game due to:
- Damage falls off very much due to enemy's increased HP and MR
- Huge CDs on basic abilities and cannot afford to go any CDR route after the DFG's nerf
- Still mana dependent, if she does not have a RoA
- Cannot burst anyone anymore due to the tanky front-line being, well, too tanky
- Transition from AP carry to a Support late game when ultimate is not available
- Requires a specific and good team in order to be successful
- She cannot change much if her team is behind, unlike Anivia or Zyra
Zyra has several problems in early and late-game:
- Easily ganked and pretty weak until level 3
- Cannot afford to have any spell-vamp (especially relevant in late game)
- Struggles against heavy AoE comps, which destroys her plants, one of the main sources of damage, easily during late-game
- Struggles against divers late-game
- Requires 2 tanks on her team
- Usually is focused down heavily later in the game due to a lot of earlier kills earlier, disrupting her DPS

You're wrong about Zyra's AP mid lane. She, out of all mages, is probably the closest one to a variant consistent AoE DPS with some AoE disables, not to mention zoning and objective control.
It's incredibly hard to pressure Zyra on her lane, and even if you do dodge her skill-shots during laning, her farm is superior to many, and she can get away easily without building as a glass cannon (actually the reason why so many people fail with her so much). Unlike Orianna, she can build RoA and be fine with her mana, while for the robot Athene's is a must, which automatically puts her (Orianna) into the glass cannon category, since she cannot allow to delay Deathcap. Zyra trades well and, if she is afraid of the jungler, can farm relentlessly while not going away from the turret.
The reason why Zyra as of late played as a support in many tournaments is fundamentally only one - other classical supports were nerfed into oblivion and other AP mid do not provide as much support with their kit without scaling with gold. Zyra provides AoE snare (superior to Morgana's in mid/late game period), a slow (superior to any support or Ap mid), bush control and zone control with plants, safe face-check, objective control (plants scale with Zyra's personal level), and a huge AoE CC KNOCK-UP Ult (not reduced by tenacity), which doesn't require to build an expensive item like Zhonya's in order to be placed safely.
