Near the end of S2 top laners, M5 notably, stopped building anything that wasn't defensive on any of their top laners. Sunfire/warmogs Xin, Olaf, Darius, etc. At the end of season 2 and starting to pick up speed in S3 people noted that this was the best way to play the characters.

There's this trend out there that "you either build full damage or full defense no exception" that has arisen because of ... well incorrect assumptions. MOBA games actually typically REQUIRE you to build a defensive item by your second item or you'll get crushed. Many AGILITY heroes in DotA will buy poor man's shield or vanguard just to augment their survivability, yet are carries. In WoW it's expected for priests to stack on survivability. In PoE every character needs defense. So why is it LoL players assume NO DEFENSE FOR OFFENSIVE PEOPLE?
I don't know where people ever get this idea. By the time Darius has 3 items the ADC has 3 items, and a 3 item ADC will shred down anything.

MR is pretty pointless as is. Void staff is an extremely powerful item right now that most mages rush anyway, in addition to the fact that the pen changes HEAVILY favored mages who stack far more flat pen than anyone else.
This gets way more in to detail than I'd have wanted, and goes in to some extreme systems work that was done to make it worth it.
