So running full AS runes and 44% crit damage is good?

AP Varus works in certain team comps. If you know the enemy team's champions are probably going to stack a lot of health (let's say your team runs lots of Mpen / ArmPen) and you know the enemy team won't dive you immediately.

Tanks may be harder to play in season 3. But that's not the main reason why they're not picked so much anymore. Tanks don't offer as much as bruisers do, period.

Because they don't provide more tankines or damage than bruisers / other tanky bruisers, while providing just little bit more of utility.

I'm just building tanks as bruisers. Still get the CC but do relevant amount of damage so I can't just get ignored in a fight.

Items like Iceborn Gauntlet to add more CC, Sunfire Cape for more damage are some examples of items that fullfill this purpose.

Plus picking tanks that got %health damage is really important as well (Nasus) or Tanky Bruisers (Xin, Vi), who've got really good offensive steroids (Volibear, Nocturne, Udyr) or really good defensive steroids (Udyr, Volibear, Xin, Nasus, Cho'Gath). 

This are the reasons why some champions fell out of flavor. Either because the season 3 itemization doesn't benefit them or they're better built as full tank which is not the best option in the current meta right now.

The only problem is you lack damage when people start building more HP. If your team has a lot of damage already and needs more utility, go ahead and pick Zilean.

Or get a Sunfire Cape after Locket, and just AA camps to death.
