I think the best way to deal with these AD assassin mids is Armor yellows and/or Quints and Seeker's Armguard. This gives you a pretty hefty amount of armor, but sacrifices some early AP.
As for unconventional mids, AP Kog is easily my favorite champ in the game.
You really need strong disengage/counter CC. Cho is a great person for this, with an AOE knock up and silence. Taric is not bad, but can only lock down one person. Zyra is another great champ both for that kind of composition.
Queen of Blades anyone would be amazing. She is too awesome.

Just realized I titled this PFE Ezreal. XD Woops.
So with the new Udyr skin I thought each of hit stances significantly reminded me of a particular SC unit, especially with the changes to bear stance.
Tiger - Zealot. His hands even get Psionic Blades (Sort of)
Turtle - Immortal, his shield looks almost just like hardened shield.
Bear - Ultralisk, now with his dash and the dash Ultras have in Heart of the Swarm. Originally reminded me of Zealot Charge, but Tiger is too perfect for that.
Phoenix - Hellion/Hellbat. Probably Hellbat, spits fire in a cone.
This would probably never happen since Riot and Blizzard aren't the same company XD. But it would be an awesome PFE Ezreal tier skin since it would require serious appearance/noise changes. But it would be pretty damn awesome. What do you guys think??
E=Ezreal. The skinis overpriced now but was a regular Legendary price (almost) when it first came out. That's the only thing that is unfortunate.
Wondering if anyone else ran into the same issue I did. Long story short I bought PFE on sale, thought I was missing last hits in ranked and went back to old skin. Refunded the skin since I wasn't using it, then come to find out there was a bug with gold not showing up. Now knowing this I would obviously like to unrefund him XD. I'd even buy him back with RP if I could get the original sale price. 3250 is just a ton. Anyone else have the same thing happen?

Change to Muramana is pretty huge. Expect Urgot to make a resurgence with that and the lock on now.
I'd say Nexus turret mainly because they can regen health, so poke damage on an Inhibitor Turret will stick while only killing a Nexus turret will last permanently, and as stated before an open Nexus can be easily backdoored, meaning their team always has to be wary while moving outside their base to take objectives.

He does fine if you build the mana. I start Tear/Chalice and this is more than enough if you manage your mana.
@RudgeMan : See now, the only way that could be possible would be if all the gap closer assassin mids got nerfed out of viability. Are Akali, Fizz, Pantheon, Lee Sin, Kha'zix, Jayce and all those others out of the meta now?
Don't get me wrong, I adore AP Kog. I don't play him often, but I enjoy him when I do. It's just a sad fact that gap closers are the bane of his existence, particularly (but not only) during lane phase.
He does surprisingly well against many of these. Many of them hit their scary point at lvl 6, right when he hits his safe point. Build some health/Seeker's and these match ups are very manageable, though I admit they can be hard.
