Honestly I think Blitzcrank is the best support overall, not even for the amazing lane but for the fact that at even games (no one snowballed, which we'll assume since we're only comparing supports) he just has such an amazing skill to turn the game into a 5vs4.
The early game invade, the strong lane phase, the trollzy flash hook under towers, the team fight CC and the mana shield of "nana nana boo boo can't kill me".
Ali has amazing cc, roam cability, heals, tank
Sona has amazing utlity
Janna has amazing disengages
Nunu has an amazing kit
Lux & Zyra has some great damage and stuns
The best support for the team depends on what your team comp is, but blitz is #1 in most comps. Why he is banned alot

I main adc/supports and the only time I've seen anything besides berserker greaves is when we're vsing a stupid lane like Pantheon + Alistar, people will usually get Merc treds in this case to have that split second chance of flashing out of Ali pulverize before the head butt (which is certain death at that point). I've also seen videos of top players discussing items and the general acceptance is without berserker greaves your dealing less total damage then you should be which is key for that first team fight, 2nd only to not being hit in the first place.

announcing "AFK house on fire" is always appropriate reason to leave a game.
