  • posted a message on Does every support need to be a tank

Erm, but not ALL supports are tanky. Some don't even need to be...

Lux, Morgana, Fiddlesticks and Zyra are some common examples. They are basically AP casters that can work vs certain match-ups on bottom lane. The only thing stopping other champions from doing so is their scalings. Sona used to have some crazy ones upon her release, same with Soraka. But they all got cut in half. So now there's no point in doing so. From other strange yet doable things - support Anivia can work, Kayle, Orianna or even Maokai or Malphite under certain circumstances.

People for some reason are afraid of playing so called non-supports as supports cuz they got addicted to metagame taken from tournaments and streams while it's not really the best approach. Remember that Leona wasn't designed to be a support but solo top, same with Blitzcrank. I still remember when I claimed on one forum that Leona could work really well with other champion on lane (not necessarily with AD Carry as at that time, ADC+support lanes just started to get popular at really high elos) and got bashed for it. Well, i was right in the end. And from more recent examples - Zyra.

If you think that something will work, by all means go for it. Who knows - maybe you will find something really good.

As a support you generally need to fulfill following conditions:
    a) you can carry bot lane
    b) you can be useful without many items
    c) you can afford to buy wards
    d) you can peel for your carries and offer some CC/other ways of saving them

That's it. If you were to build AP - so be it. As long as you can still do your job.

Also, I agree with Emeraldw - Thresh > Blitzcrank. Simply because he offers more in every aspect of the game as he was designed for bot lane and not top. More CC, FAR stronger utility when it comes to items (let's face it - Blitzcrank really loves having Muramana + Glacial Shroud - even back in S1 when Muramana didn't exist and solo lanes were rare sight, good Blitzcranks were scary stuff). TBH, as a support main, I would claim that in current metagame, good Thresh is basically free LP in massive amounts. There are reasons why some players had literally 15+ win streaks with him at platinum-diamond tiers.

Meh, that's why discussion boards aren't good way of communicating, everyone interprets anything you say in different way than you expect them to... Oh well, let's clear this up.

To begin with kind of a troll joke - which notebooks are NOT manufactured in Asia to begin with? ;) Secondly, I really dare you to try and find something with GTX 570 and Core i7 and no-name brand.

Spending too much time to look at brand is generally waste of time if we are looking for something that is actually over 400-500$ - whether u buy Toshiba, Acer, Asus, Lenovo or MSI there are no big differences between them, at least not in mid-end class. Some exceptions of course DO exist like HP Pavillon series which are commonly known as failures but in general, you don't see notebooks branded as for "gaming" that are shit.

You seem to misunderstand one thing that notebook producers abuse - the rule of "all or nothing". That's why finding something with really cheap CPU and expensive GPU happens... never. If you buy MSI GT series (which btw I don't recommend, especially not 17" models, they really aren't durable) you get matte screen, keyboard with illuminated keys, quite good speakers with subwoofer on top of other parts inside. That's "standard". You just won't see high end GPU+CPU combined with crap case and failing fans.

Also - if you actually visited that newegg.com and checked 7 pages of gaming notebooks you can't even see any uncommon brands. Unless we consider "Asus" as uncommon. I am not sure if on their whole site and all notebook categories you could find one "no-name".

Now - about building a desktop - I never SAID you need to study IT to do so, I just said that I can do it partially because of that. Having knowledge in this field definitely could help if some part was actually damaged in transport or not working properly as I would be able to check it - eg. motherboard being in too old revision and not really liking CPU so you would need to start from updating BIOS to make it work properly or actually get proper RAM that will work in Dual Channel as it should be. And so on. Of course, you can learn it without IT degree and I won't deny it. Sorry for misunderstanding in this field.

Now - why didn't I suggest any particular model. Remember that this forum is actually international. For example, I am from Europe. He might as well be from Brazil or Korea... Furthermore, maybe he would just want to buy it in a local shop - I don't know that. I don't see much point in recommending something he may not have ability to buy. Plus, author of this topic never actually said how much he is willing to pay so throwing 800-900$ models at him is basically blind shot. It might be any other price range at this moment. So instead, I gave out general tips when it comes to getting fast machine - firstly look at GPU (i even pointed out like 12 popular models in performance order). Then look at CPU. If these two parts are good enough we can consider it and chances of getting crap greatly decrease.

Also, if that were to be the case, then recommending Lenovo or other notebook would be nothing more than spam as he might have different brands in his country - for example, in mine on top of most popular ones (Asus, MSI, Acer) we have local Aristo. They aren't that bad to be honest actually. But on the other hand, getting something like Alienware is out of question as they are imported in really limited numbers and it's hard to find one.

If you want to discuss any points raised by, go ahead. I will answer and if you are right, admit my mistakes as I am not omniscient and can spout some bullshit sometimes. Though I do hope it goes both ways instead of "things that are just plain false" - discussion is discussion when we can provide some points and examples.  ;)

I am not "making" my own laptops. It's not really doable to begin with. In PC's cases, sure, I can build one in less than an hour (studying IT has its advantages). But in notebook's case you need a group of engineers to make all parts fit and not burn/melt/break in few hours. In theory, sure, I could get a group of technology freaks, spend few weekends (and looots of money) and we could possibly make something that would work and not fall apart instantly. But that's only theory.

What I meant to say is to LOOK at parts notebook has. As they decide how fast notebook will be. Brand itself means nothing. Well, maybe apart from Alienware but then you will be paying let's say 3000$ for 1600$ worth of components. However one Asus for 1000$ can be crap for gaming as they put in Core i7 (which is awesome) but paired it with GT520M (which will be enough to run Tetris and Minesweeper maybe). And one priced almost the same, with even the same color of case might have a very good combo of GT650M and 3rd Gen Core i5 3210M which can run you Crysis 2 on 60+ FPS while streaming in FullHD.

That's why one has to look on what parts given notebook has. In general, something with GT 560M+Core i5 2430M is enough to play latest games on medium details and most on full. It won't really matter which brand would that notebook be if it has parts of this quality inside it.

Of course, other parts matter too. Like quality of screen, place for additional SSD, the size of built-in HDD (if you want to replace PC with your notebook you want at least 500GB, preferably 750), amount of RAM (4GB minimum, 8GB recommended... though that's a minor problem, RAM costs almost nothing at the moment), time that it can spend on batteries, weight and so on. But these factors matter, if we are talking about gaming notebook, only AFTER making sure we have good GPU+CPU combo. The only thing actually as important as them might be resolution of the screen and the size of it - having FullHD on 15" is stupid. Quality won't actually get much higher than from 1366x768 due to technical limitations but we will HAVE to use this 1080p res to get to this desireable state (underscaling on LCD screens isn't exactly best idea). What, btw, consumes FAR more power from ur components than 1366x768. It actually makes a bit of sense only on 17" and even then I still recommend 1600x900. Then again, it's kind of expertise in IT field already so let's not dwelve too much into that unless you are actually interested in why is that so.

    Budget and we can talk.

Strictly speaking LoL doesn't have high requirements. Even Core i3 2330m + 4GB RAM + GeForce GT540M can run it on high details. In general, if you want to buy gaming notebook then you should actually look at graphic card 1st:

    It basically goes like this:
    Intel HD3000 <<<<<<< GeForce GT540M < GeForce GT555M = GeForce GT635M < Radeon HD6770M < GeForce GT640M < GTX460M < Radeon HD6870M < GeForce GT560M < GeForce GT650M < GeForce GTX570M.

Now check shops for notebooks within max you can offer and find ones with strongest GPU. Once you do so, check for CPU - Core i5 is already really good, if you can manage to pay a bit more though i7 is even better as it will be true Quad Core instead of just Dual. Under no circumstances, however, decide to choose notebook with i7 and worse GPU than one with i5 and stronger Graphic Card. As you would just lose overall performance.

Also (sorry if i will offend someone but that's the sad reality) don't bother with AMD CPU's. Waste of your money as fastest ones from them aren't even close to mobile Core i5. Sure, they have more cores than them but it doesn't matter if one has like 1.6 GHz and most games don't even support multithreading properly. Even more of an issue as 2.0 GHz from Intel Core i5 = basically 2.5 from AMD FX.

They might make sense, however, if you are looking for something really cheap. I will elaborate on the subject if you won't have enough money for what I suggested above.

Tis' a lie. Diff is just busy eating lunches all day long and that's why he doesn't write articles lately.

Though I must say, it's a good piece of analysis ^^

I would say that it actually isn't that much of a problem. I played AD Ahri, AP and Jungle Nami and many maaaany other strange things. I wasn't criticized for them, in fact most people replied "it's just a normal", I also use the same words when someone asks if he can try this or that.

In general, what is the difference between playing freshly bought champion (what happens pretty much every game, especially when new one comes out) or testing unusual build? It's the right place to try new stuff as long as you try it seriously instead of stacking boots (unless it's sorcerer's shoes, there might be a logic in stacking them sometimes but it's actually a long topic for analysis).

If you were to play normal game with VVinrar, you will see that he experiments as well. With Maokai mid being the least of strange things he uses as there's a reason he knows how to play Karma and which matchups she wins... I personally used Fiora and Irelia mid multiple times, worked out quite well. Also it's not really hard to find some people to play with if you are afraid of randoms.

That's why I don't really believe in community being responsible. You can easily ask ANY theorycrafter/site manager and send them what you created. If they like it, they might actually accept it. Community is a convenient excuse: "I am not going to put any work cuz everyone will hate it. Also, I can't even test stuff cuz people will call me idiot!"

You are mistaken in few parts.

A: You don't have high elo. Oh noes. And who cares? When Diff started he was like 1300, TheBirdOfPrey was unranked, Emeraldw still isn't gold... and so on. There's a great difference between knowing how to DO something and how to teach or at least explain it. I guarantee, you can even be 500 ELO and make good articles. In fact, they could be really interesting - analysis of, let's say, 100 games from that bracket, average cs and scores, number of trolls and so on... I am sure it could get you somewhere.
Also, if you are afraid that you opinion will get rejected then you can even try doing it in the same way as I did before:
    http://www.reignofgaming.net/blogs/a-different-view/vvinrar/21346-roundtable-discussion-how-to-escape-elo-hell
Just ask around other players, make it a discussion. I wasn't sure on some things so I just interviewed people from platinum-diamond bracket to express their opinion.

B: Forget about community for a second. Write something, visit A DIFFerent View chatroom (or any other that actually can give you constructive criticism and features some already known theorycrafters), show there a draft. Prepare for getting flamed and having to correct lots of mistakes. Then you can submit it somewhere. And ONLY then you are allowed to say that "community" hates you/blocks you. But stopping before even starting? That's just childish. Stop saying that "community" blocks you before actually trying...

As the one who drew it, i must say: Thanks a lot ;)
Also, for those interested, full size of it without subtitles is available at: http://ziptofaf.deviantart.com/#/d5rf3f2

As for the article itself, I am not really sure if Singed is a counter to Jax. Then again, I don't really main top lane so I might be wrong.

I drew it. Bad news though - the original resolution is exactly the same as the one in the logo as it was really rushed drawing (VVinrar made me do it in 2 hours, he is evil ;-;). I can only give you version without any subtitles if you want.
