Xypherous announced even more item changes for Season 3, this time featuring the tear of the goddess and more
Hey there Summoners. After my first post about the upcoming preseason itemization changes, which you can find here, I’d like to talk about an item path that both demonstrates some of the updates we’re making to item tooltips and previews an upcoming item.
One of our primary goals in League of Legends is to facilitate “clarity of design,” ensuring that things work exactly how you expect them to work – and then some. With the preseason update, we’ve gone back and retuned a lot of our existing items to fit under this new paradigm and to basically re-tool some of our lesser used items into items that can fit into a wider variety of player builds. Let’s go into today’s preview item and its upgrades
Tear of the Goddess
- +250 Mana
- +7 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
- UNIQUE Passive – Mana Charge: Each time you spend Mana, your maximum Mana increases by 4 (3 second cooldown).
- Bonus Mana: 0/750
It’s pretty much the Tear of the Goddess you’ve all known and loved for quite some time. You cast spells, you gain maximum mana. It does give a bit less total mana than it did before, but it’s also cheaper at a new cost of 700 Gold.
The passive is mostly the same, with one key difference: Tear of the Goddess used to trigger on spellcasts; now it triggers when you spend Mana, including through the use of channeled effects. While these two effects are one and the same for most characters, any character that has a channeled effect that costs mana will now be able to use Tears to greater effect. Characters like Anivia and Karthus who were already excellent with Tear of the Goddess now have additional ways to trigger it, while some characters like Singed and Ashe will have a newfound ability to trigger Tear of the Goddess from their toggled abilities, opening up new item paths for those characters.
You may have noticed the new words ‘Mana Charge’ – this is part of our new item tooltip terminology. Unique Passives that are shared across items now have a unique name and indicator to call them out. Unique Passives with the same name don’t stack. This mechanic is something you’re already familiar with on existing items; we’ve merely called it out explicitly with new terminology in an effort to clarify our item tooltips.
Archangel’s Staff
- +250 Mana
- +60 Ability Power
- +10 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
- UNIQUE Passive – Insight: +(3% of Maximum Mana) Ability Power
- UNIQUE Passive – Mana Charge: Each time you spend Mana, you gain 5 maximum Mana (3 second cooldown).
- Bonus Mana: 0/750
- Transforms into Seraph’s Embrace at 750 Bonus Mana
Archangel’s staff has been similarly changed in line with the new wording and functionality, and has undergone similar cost / mana and trigger recalculations so it will fit better into our new item pricing paradigm.
Archangel’s staff also has the Mana Charge passive to indicate that this passive doesn’t stack if you build a new Tear of the Goddess. However, with the Staff you gain Five mana whenever you spend mana, rather than Four mana. Upgrading to Archangel’s staff will thus increase your rate of gain on the Mana Charge.
You may also have noticed that there’s one curious line at the end of the tooltip.
If you think about it there’s no real reason why gold has to be the only way to upgrade an item. In the case of Archangel’s Staff we wanted to create an upgrade that flowed naturally from the usage and theme of the item. But if you already have 1000 Mana and 10 Mana Regen per 5, what possible upgrade could you want from Archangel’s Staff? Just what are you going to do with all that mana anyway when you’ve charged this item for 25 minutes of the game?
Seraph’s Embrace
- (Upgraded from Archangel’s Staff when fully charged)
- +1000 Mana
- +60 Ability Power
- +10 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
- UNIQUE Passive – Insight: +(3% of Maximum Mana) Ability Power
- UNIQUE Active: Drains 25% of your current mana to shield yourself for an equal amount for 2.5 seconds - 120 second cooldown.

Posted 11/11/2012 12:00:30 PMVeigar has a passive manaregen which is quite enough for him with Golem buff and dorans. Here's a hint: Veigar doesn't need it. Have you ever seen NYjacky build it on Veigar? Answer is no. Because he needs survivability. Best Veig build atm is Sorc, Doran's R, Kage's, Doran's R, Raba, Void, DFG, Chain Vest, Quicksilver Sash or Grail (if you go for it get a Chalice early game), Zhonya's. Because you don't need tons of mana regen when you have Golem buff. Also, you won't be able to use tons of manaregen when you're dead.
Even on Karthus no one in top elo builds Archangel: they all go for Sorc + Chalice (optional but Asian teams abuse it) + RoA + Raba + Void + Zhonya's, the get Grail and whatever.
In short: Archangel is a niche item and it's pretty poor even on Kassadin. The only champs that really need Archangel are Ryze (who gets RoA+ FH+ Abyssal anyway so he's tanky as hell even with Arch) and AP Kog (with Rylai, Raba. Void + whatever) to sustain the increasing R costs, and he can afford to get an item with 0 resistances and average stats just because he has 2200 range, Flash, Cleanse and usually a Janna or Lulu or Alistar to CC and carebear him when he gets dived.
TL;DR: Archangel is very situational and 5h177y item, and that's why it's being remade. Seraph's Embrace looks a bit better because it has a strong active, but if you think it's a good item, you should absolutely stack 4 of those and get Raba (skip Void and defense stats, that's for losers). I can assure you Galio will tremble in fear before you.
Mongol General: Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

Posted 11/11/2012 12:57:30 PMI never said that Karthus should build archangels. Of course Ryze is building AA, i was talking about who might build Seraph's Embrace that isn't building AA atm.
It always depends on the situation, but if you are having 3000 mana with karthus, the shield provides 750 hp shield, which definetely is strong. It does indeed work on rift walking kassadins, but once you hit end game AA would be too risky a item to keep and two bad in early game. With the shield it will provide the defensive stats a kassadin needs since he will only be in a fight for 2.5 seconds before riftwalking away again.
I never said you sohuld stack 4 SE, i can assure you i know how to build. If you're building something like ROA, Rabadons, Zhonyas, Boots, Void and you need a sixth item it could be SE or Abyssal, but depending on the enemy ap carry and your own champ, SE might be more effective in some cases.

Posted 11/10/2012 2:12:36 AMto be fair how many manaless champs are considered op/up, if they are trying to fix the balance between classes, giving manaless champ have *A* downside besides nerfing their kits, just like how there isnt enough attack speed tank items to build on-hit champs tanky, maybe all manaless champs should not have access to a shield late game

Posted 11/9/2012 12:47:31 PMSeraph's Embrace is really awesome! Really good work riot! (y)
I love how it adds more depth to LoL items, and the fact that it just 'upgrades' itself is really great.
I would love to see this kind of thing on more items, The New Eleisa's Miracle for e.g is one great step towards support itemization.
HOWEVER!!!! My main champion has got something to say!
NIDALEE has always been a prime customer of Archangel Staff; charging it to max. in cougar form by 14 min in the game.
Does that mean she wont be able to use it as her cougar form does not use mana?
That is a unique problem riot needs to address ASAP! How am i gonna increase mana on Nidalee?

Posted 11/9/2012 5:40:14 AMI'm actually really pissed. Rabadons, Sorc Boots, and 4 Archangels may be a troll build, but it was DAMN fun. Making the % mana into AP a unique passive is just uncalled for.

Posted 11/8/2012 10:30:19 PMThis will be a great item on Singed - with FoN being out of the picture, unless a better option comes along, you will be looking to a BV instead.
You can also power up the tear in less and 10 minutes if you make it a focus (toggle every 3 seconds, 20x per minute).
Itemization could look like this - RoA (725 mana), SE (1000 mana), FH (500 mana), BV (375 mana), Mercs being the core, with a 6 item being whatever you need vs the enemy. Add this to his 1025 base.
3625 mana @ level 18 if you itemize this way. This also gives 108.75 bonus AP capping at 248.75 (could be slightly different if you took the mana masteries or AP masteries).
Then of course, a big, fat 900 HP shield.
But FoN was a pretty godlike item on Singed - I think people underestimated it slightly.

Posted 11/8/2012 6:13:21 PMSeraph's Embrace and a few rod of ages for singed? redicilous shield, decent ap, and tons of health right there. Seems logical if they'd limit the shield, on the other hand its 2.5 seconds with a 2 minute cooldown so it could save you from being bursted down as an AP
