Opinions on "Costume Change"
IronStylus hit the forums asking users what they thought on Costume Changes for champions. Read the original post below, or check out our red tracker for even more replies!
Hey, I didnt see anything about skins on here so I have an odd question.. It's something that's been on my brain for a while.. Recently, as a lot of people have noticed, our quality of skins has gone up, including sometimes near reworks of entire champions when we produce skins. We do custom animations, particles, and a lot of other features. It's a big improvement from what we refer to now as "color swaps", when sometimes skins were just palette changes, or maybe small geometry tweaks on the model at most.
Oh yeah, my question! How do you guys feel about "costume change" skins. Maybe not so much entire sweeping thematic shifts, but maybe just s different treatment of basic look, outfit or armor. Being on the skins team off and on, I really love taking our characters to the nines. One things I've noticed is that sometimes, depending on the champion, some champions can accommodate really incredible and compelling themes, or have real estate for a lot of visual change, and have huge opportunities for particle changes or custom animations, etc, However, sometimes i feel some can't, that's opinion though. Also, sometimes I feel as though champions might just need what basically comes down to a "costume change" to give some new flavor, or something simple and novel. It's a not the greatest term, but I can't really think of something better to use to refer to something that sort of, at most, geometry changes and maybe minor tweaks in other areas.
What are some thoughts on this? This is entirely a curiosity of mine, and this is no promise of any such content, but I'm always looking for opportunities to bring interesting content to players, and I'm wondering if maybe a "lower" tier of what I've described above is of interest.
AGAIN! This is no commitment to features, I just genuinely am interested in feelings about this stuff. I have no idea nor any opinion on pricing or any of that, I'm interested in what sort of themes are appropriate, what scope such skins might encompass, and what players feel about what equates to possibly a less packed piece of content than the current lot of skins in terms of VFX, animation and other features.
So, whaddaya think?
Major ISP Causing Lag Issues
Riot has pointed out that there is an ISP causing lag for players. The ISP is working hard to fix this issue.
Summoners!
We've been seeing problems with a major ISP and its partner companies all this week, and today has been especially spotty. We know this is causing game lag and disconnects for many of you all over NA, so are posting to let you know what the problem is.
The ISP is working hard to fix the problem, so here's hoping everyone will be able to play on a solid connection soon.
We'll post again once we have more news.

Posted 12/27/2012 11:06:42 AMWell... after ripping off some champs of dota and dota 2 (i wont post any speccific names since i haven't played dota that much but there are so many champs that are "older" than LoL ones and has lots of simmilarities), then doing so with hud (especially with the way that skills and their ranks are displayed on it) now its time to rip off steam workshop. I like riot but doing stuff and calling it innovative while it is totally ripped off isn't good nor fair. And when someone will tell them about that they are totally copying some stuff seen somewhere else. They will say that it is totally new idea and they didn't know about these.
I remember back when Varus was about to release. There was an AMA with champ designer (Xypherous prolly). Somebody said that his charging arrow mechanism looks totally like some other famous characters (Kai from Vindictus and/or Hunter/sniper from Team Fortress 2 with his bow). Answer for this was - "never heard of them"... yeah... right.

Posted 12/27/2012 12:36:37 PMSometimes they do give credit and say their inspirations of said champion. That is the whole "achetype" thing they try to fulfill. Some of these may be unintentional or coincidence too. Maybe they haven't heard of those games. I have not.

Posted 12/27/2012 1:59:13 PMI haven't heard of those games either. And piggybacking off of what NUcC said, you obviously weren't aware that the guys who head RIOT started out as designers for Dota. Seems that we're both oblivious to some things. I'm sure if Guinsoo wanted he could take legal action in removing a large selection of champions from the Dota 2 roster, because he designed them.
Edit: My bad. This was meant for steelek XD

Posted 12/28/2012 5:27:05 PMI have never heard of Kai from Vindictus, and the Sniper's bow in TF2 is a very loose idea to say that Varus was a "copied idea".
That's like saying that LoL was copied from WoW because their acronyms are both palindromes. There are only so many things in the world, and some concepts are just universal. Pulling a bow back at a steady rate further and further for instance.
Saying that everything Riot does is like saying Marvel copied DC or vice versa. They both came up with very similar ideas, and you can't really call them copied, because the ideas are just very broad concepts. Archetypal, for lack of a better term.

Posted 12/28/2012 9:11:55 PMI am familiar with Kai from Vindictus, but this whole line of thought is ridiculous. The notion of a longer farther draw adding power and punch to a bowshot has been around since the beginning of archery itself, and led to the creation much later on of the compound bow to deal with heavily armored targets. Unless you're insinuating that Riot is at fault for stealing an idea from 10000 BCE?

Posted 12/27/2012 12:22:01 AMWith rent a ward skin seeming to prove a success I always wondered hey why not do rent a skin on champions , I know a few people sitting on 10k plus ip and not necessarily wanting to spend it on champions they don't want. I wonder if that could work in the sense you rent a skin for a week for cost equivalent ip for the skin I.E 6.3k ip for a 975RP skin.
All in all I like the idea of costume change idea I would love to see something like this in game!

Posted 1/1/2013 4:26:55 PMFYI "rent a ward Harrowing" initiative was a complete market fail: Hippalus already stated that from now on any purchasable feature will be permanent.
I like the idea of permanent custom palette swaps/minor visual changes for cheap price though.

Posted 12/27/2012 12:19:20 AMIs LoL looking to adopt a costume system like in dota 2? I think it is a good idea, the ability to customize certain parts of the character gave them a more realistic feel for me.

Posted 12/27/2012 2:07:04 AMI'd be ok with palette swaps if they were free, or at least "semi free" like a rotation system or an IP purchase option.

Posted 12/27/2012 5:04:40 AMExcept they aren't talking about palette swaps? For someone talking to someone else about not reading you didn't either. They said that a lot of their old skins were simply 'palette swaps' but that the quality of their skins have improved. Iron Stylus is saying that not all champions seem good enough for whole new animations and what not but that maybe if they had different /outfits/ still through skins, but just if the skin was like other skins in terms of particles but had a different outfit it would bring newer life to a character.

Posted 12/27/2012 11:11:03 AMI think we may all be a little bit confused.
I interepreted what he was saying as:
The difference between Riven and Redeemed Riven, and Riven and Battle Bunny Riven. The former would be a "Costume change" - a different take on the core theme of the character, keeping her core theme intact but interpreting it in a different way. The latter however, is a thematic shift - It's not simply a costume change, it's taking the initial character and turning her into a battle bunny.
I think a costume change could be considered "canon", while a thematic change would most certainly not be canon.
More examples of what I mean:
Lord Darius - costume change, Bioforge Darius - Thematic change
Nightblade Irelia - costume change, Aviator Irelia - thematic change
Any of the Pentakill skins would be a thematic shift.
I think.

Posted 12/28/2012 5:14:14 PMI read and understand the costume as to say that Riot will try and go away from the recolouring and work a bit more on skins to add: new colours, new geometry and new particles.
Ironstylus mentions how it won't necessarily be whole new thematic skins - such as fire, beach, deep sea and whatever else is out there.
