Improved Health Bars, Coming Soon to a League Near You!

We have already seen this change on the PBE for a few weeks, however Xelnath hit the forums with what looks to be the final version. 

Hello Summoners, 

Since the start of Season 3, there has been a dramatic increase in available health across champions. This has required us to revisit our assumptions in what information needs to be clearly conveyed to players. So we've updated the champion health bars to handler higher health.

Here you can see how the original health bars worked:

Once Amumu passed 3,200 health, the notches stopped increasing and it is very hard to count how much health an opponent has. 

Here, Amumu is modelling the new health bars:

When you cross the 1,000 health threshold, a full, dark tick now appears. This makes it easier to see how many thousands of health your opponent has. 

While we tried many, many iterations, we chose this one because it balanced between familiarity (no need to re-learn what 1 tick means!) and clarity past 2,000 health.

    Don't really like the ruler appearance but I'll get used to it and this is clearly a functional improvement.

    Now all they need to do is make it show effective health instead of health and we're golden.

    That... would be SO awesome!

    But how would you differentiate between effective health vs magical and vs physical damage?

    Two bars isn't the most elegant. The best would be switching to one damage and resistance type, but I don't see that happening. Given we're stuck with two damage types, two effective health bars would communicate MUCH more than is currently communicated.

    Then you would need three bars (HP, effective HP magic, effective HP physic) because sometime you need to know the raw HP too, for example if you do %HP damage or true damage.

    But still, you are right with your implied problem, the way resistances are shown is bad.

    I would argue you don't really need to see HP. The only time you need to know actual HP is if you have a true damage finisher, like Cho'gath's ultimate (which already has an indicator to help since it's hard to tell from the bar). Sure it would be nice to know HP so you know how much %HP you're doing, but it's not like your numbers aren't already obfuscated by your:

    • base damage
    • damage ratio
    • armor
    • penetration

    %HP is just another layer on that and all in all not terribly important to know exactly values for in my opinion. Knowing actual health is not actually very useful in most cases, whereas effective HP is.

    True damage is an edge case, and I would prefer for the edge case to be obfuscated, not the normal case. Show me effect health bars for magic and physical and then I'll know how hard it is for me to kill someone. If I'm someone like Olaf who does a lot of true damage, maybe it's no better than before, but for most champions it's way better.

    Look again, it's 100 per small tick, 1000 per big tick. Looks like they've changed it since earlier iterations, it used to be 200 per.

    Yeah they changed it from that because squishy champions looked so effing weird early game.
    Also it was kind of hard to get used to for some people

    This is very nice, gotta say Riot's design team comes with really nice ideas all the time (like seeing recalling people on the minimap or hear the sound when tower changes target on you).

    Hopefully this sends more of a 'DO NOT HIT THIS GUY' message to people when a pure tank just waddles right into your team.
