Dragon's Damage Lowered; He Now Applies Grievous Wound

The dragon's base damage seems to be lowered to 110 from 145.

Another interesting change is the addition of Grievous Wound to his abilities - when cast on the champion it reduces the healing said champion receives.

4.3 Itemization Update [Update - 2/19/2014]

Wasn't able to act on all the feedback but I'd like to give you a heads up over what we changed and kind of the reason one way or the other.

Going to go over some of the more pressing points that I heard about which a lot of you wanted to see action on:

Boots of Lucidity Changes Reverted

So our original goal here with Lucidity boots was to finally clean up CDR as well as offer a really cheap boot option for Support players. As for actual usage rates, Lucidity Boots are picked up in one in four games by non AP users.

Although many of you have correctly pointed out that the actual cause of the mess in CDR is masteries and how granular they are.

This is fairly annoying as they should ideally be tailored towards Supports and Tanks and are mostly being picked up on AD Glass DPS that then become even squishier and more annoying when they do.

But in any event, it's not the time or the place to fix that and certainly much too soon.

Ancient Coin, Nomad's Medallion, Talisman of Ascension

Several of you have pointed it that it's incredibly silly that the Coin line has even more mana regeneration than the Spellthief line, a line intended for mages.

We've bolstered the coin line to be more about recovery and regeneration and lowered the high-end mana regeneration of the item. It now gives equivalent mana regeneration to the Spellthief line at the highest tier.

Talisman of Ascension: 15 MP/5 --> 10 MP/5 (-5)
Favor now grants 10(+5) health when a nearby minion dies that you did not kill. (Roughly equal to 10 HP/5)

We also reduce the amount of passive gold generation that the item gives you from 4 GP/10 to 3 GP/10 - simply to create a better risk to reward structure between all three items.

Spellthief's is the riskiest item and has the most rewards. Targon's has some moderate risk and has moderate reward. Coin is now a safe option and has lower rewards than the other.

On live, by contrast, Tier 2 Coin and Targon's are roughly equivalent gold generation while Spellthief's potential gold generation is higher but also manifestly unreachable in most practical circumstances.

Spellthief's Edge, Frostfang, Frost Queen's Claim AP

We put a little bit of AP back on the Tier 1 / Tier 2 versions of these items. I could see arguments for this being a good lever to buff the item in the future if it still needs it.

Tier 1: 5 AP (+5), 2 (-1) MP/5, 5 (+1) Gold on hit.
Tier 2: 10 AP (+10), 5 (-2) MP/5, 10 (+2) Gold on hit.

Face of the Mountain Active

We reduced the power of this on the AD front and added some AP scaling - The item now shields for 10% of your maximum Health and the damage is 100% of their Total Attack Damage and 30% of their Ability Power.

...assuming the changes make it in. I'm always slightly out of sync with the normal deploy times.

 Other Items

There was a couple of items that didn't get their costs properly reduced. These were errors on my part. XD

Rylai's Crystal Sceptre is still kind of glaring at me.

Doran's Shield

We still want to hit the item pretty hard but many of you pointed out it seemed way too harsh, we raised the HP/5 to 6 - making the item's stats in and of themselves barely cost efficient.

It's might still be too harsh but the dominance of all-in bot lanes is causing significant stagnation in the amount of picks. (Though, admittedly, spellthief's edge might allow the poke supports to poke back.)

Boots of Mobility Not Reverted

We still believe that for the long term health of the game, Boots of Mobility needs a real tradeoff from the other boot options.

While several of you have brought up the fact that this causes some Junglers to fall out of favor and won't affect several others - there has been and will be a ton of shakeup in the jungle scene from changes in jungle items to jungle champions themselves that tuning for the environment now makes less sense than tuning for the best possible future.

Note that this was not true for Lucidity's case. Lucidity's case was tuning for a best possible future - but since the present was relatively static and unchanging it would've just created more damage in the interim with random 5%'s and AD Casters being unsupported in CDR.

Note: We're out of time tuning for this current patch as we plan to ship this soon - but we'll need feedback and follow-through on this. No doubt that something will need further tuning in 4.4

    [TT] Overlord's Bloodmail

    • Now costs 2544 (up from 2380)

What kind of pun/reference is intended here?

  • #22 daft_inquisitor

None. Why would there be a reference? Overlord's Bloodmail is an item. It only exists on Twisted Treeline [TT]. The price was raised because it's cost was too low for the benefit.

  • #26 Basinator

Because the price is looking REALLY weird to me. After all, why did they add a single digit change?

  • #27 daft_inquisitor

...it went up by over 150 gold. How is that single digit?

  • #28 Basinator

ah sorry for expressing strangely. I am just wondering why they actually changed the last degit. Why not 2540? Why 2544?

  • #29 daft_inquisitor

That's just how the pricing is done. They base it on the price-per-HP ratio of lower tier items. They probably made it smaller by a certain fraction, and that caused an odd number change. This is hardly the only item in the game like that.

  • #30 Basinator

Show me any other item with not 0 in the last digit that isn't brutalizer.

  • #31 ordosan

trinity is 3703 (used to be 4000 until the combine cost turned to 3 gold) but other than that all other items are bought with a 0/5 single didgit buy cost(btw there are alot of numbers ending in 5)

That works for me. Meets Basinator's criteria.

EDIT: Also, Sword of the Occult: 1369.

ya. had noting better to do so I went through EVERY item in the league item list.

  • #34 Basinator

    Isn't SOTO 1200?

  • #35 daft_inquisitor

Fair enough, but it wasn't always. Change log:
    V1.0.0.152:

    • Item cost reduced to 1200g from 1369g.
    • Combine cost reduced to 800g from 954g.
  • #14 Zero_Fruit

Vi and elise now have a lot more dragon control relative to other early dragon soloers like nasus, fiddle, and warwick.

    Not sure about udyr.

  • #15 IONDragonX

Well, Elise will lose half of her on-hit heal, too.

I wonder why they would leave the DoT on the Dragon if they wanted to add GW? Seems like it should be one or the other.

  • #18 Mysnomer

Because heaven forbid you have powerful niche characters, noooo, you better get back to farming that Wight camp, Warwick >:( We put a lot of effort into balancing it and we expect you to use it! Quit sneaking dragon and play fair, everyone. Stop doing things without items, that's toxic. Look, take this free gold, supports and junglers, just take it, so we don't have to balance characters to be intrinsically strong. Irelia is innately strong, and you don't want to end up like Irelia, do you?

...I don't understand why that has anything to do with what IONDragon said...

  • #23 Mysnomer

Warwick & Fiddle. These characters have incredible sustain and are eventually capable of killing the dragon solo (at decently low levels as well, I think the lowest I heard was lvl 4) and used to be able to baron (fiddle was iffy if you got bad knockups). Then the dragon and baron got buffs and buffs and buffs to stop that from happening, because pocket strats like sneaking dragons isn't cool I guess? Originally, dragon just had a DoT effect as it's distinguishing feature. Then it got Attack speed reduction (nerf to warwick) and MR (nerf to fiddle and WW). Then it was immune to disables, then it was immune to any form of AR/MR shred. But apparently that still wasn't enough. Now they are going to make it apply grievous wounds, almost guaranteeing that fiddle will not be able to solo it, and warwick will need will need decent items, regardless of his level, before he has a chance of dueling it.

It's part of my problem with Riot's design philosophy. If a hero is intrinsically capable, without items, they are "toxic," because they usually have sustain or something that keeps them in lane. Or they have too much "passive power" and thus are boring to play. I hate that logic. Those times when I'm sick of minigames, or tired of missing skillshots b/c I've got a high ping or something, I chill out with a relaxing game of Warwick. Just powerfarm the jungle, your ult is a point-n-click, so ganks are about surprise and team-mate awareness, no muss, no fuss. Some times "boring" is nice for a change.

  • #24 daft_inquisitor

    Right, but I don't understand why you said this in a REPLY to IONDRAGONX'S comment. It doesn't have ANY relevance to what he said. It should have been its own new post. -__-;

  • #25 Mysnomer

because he said this: "I wonder why they would leave the DoT on the Dragon if they wanted to add GW? Seems like it should be one or the other. "

Why would they do something like that? Because they want to make dragon a raid boss style thing, despite the fact that it conflicts with having characters who use their strong sustain for sneaky dragon solos. So they overload dragon with stuff to keep those characters down.

  • #12 kwaadschimmel

With grievous wounds, no more soloing dragon with Fiddle....
