If you're a 1500 player last season and now 1k elo after the matches just climb back up if you belong there.
I would guess because the placement matches have a lot more randomness, so you end up in situations where people really have no idea what they are doing vs your skill, or you are way in over your head vs your skill, so it's a higher frequency of 'bad teammate who didn't know what to do' and 'omg that [insert pubstomp champion here] was just ridiculously good.
I encountered a gragas today who was outfarming our pretty good mid 2:1 . That was fun. Didn't matter that I won my lane -- that's placement matches unfortunately. It should settle down soon
