@Riot, question about employement(QA)

  • Hi

I was just wondering: How expansive is your QA department? Are all QA positions full time(regular), or are they also temporary(contracted)? I tried to find this info on the website, but failed to do so.

Also, what types of testing do your QA departments cover? Do you have one for each section of the game, such as UI, gameplay, hardware compatibility(if that is even tested?), or does QA just cover everything?

I also know that there is Live testing. Is this considered QA or a more specialized section?

And one more thing. How vital is having a degree to obtaining a QA position, especially vs experience?

I am a QA Tester for a major company, have been for 2(going on 3) years. I deal specifically with PC Compatibility Testing(however I have also done general testing). One of my goals in life right now is to somehow make it to Riot and I was just wondering about some of the things you look for(other than my shining personality~).

Thanks in advance for any answer

Edit: Lol, misspelled title. I am so talented. :c

QA is a full time position at Riot. We span almost every team here that requires QA support: QA for maps (like the revamp of TT), web, automation, compatibility testing, new features (the new UI/proving grounds/tutorials/coop vs. AI).

You could say there are two "live" teams with QA at the company. We have the Live Design team which is more focused on assessing the balance of the game. Then you have the Live QA team which I am now on. We are focused more on tracking down issues on live and working with appropriate teams to get them fixed; it is more of a jack of all trades roll. In addition we are the ones actually handling all the deploys of content to players.

Does having a relevant degree help? yes. Is it required to have a degree? no. Experience is incredibly valuable.

In terms of traits outside of having the skills, being able to work with a team and have a personality that works at the company is important. Also, liking video games is important

Is QA a constantly hiring thing, since the company is expanding so rapidly, or is it super closed off and difficult to get into?

Also, are phone interviews done for people outside of the state, or is travel required? I'm honestly not sure I'd even get an interview, but I would love to! I love this game, I love QA, I am going to make it in this industry one way or another. I'd just rather work for a company I love

And I figured since most of my experience is with PC Games, I might be pretty valuable. I specialize in PC Hardware Compatibility Testing, so it's a little.. skewed I guess, but is very useful I think in identifying the types of issues you guys must see.

Thanks so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. Also if at any point there's a way I can pick your brain further, or someone else's, please let me know! I know things are pretty tight lipped with NDA and such, but I would love more information! <3

    Thanks so so much!

We are constantly hiring and have many positions open right now: http://www.riotgames.com/careers

We fly candidates out if we believe they are good enough to bring for an onsite interview.
  • Hi Stephiroth,

This thread talks a lot about working in QA too:
