How do you guys build Sejuani?

  • I mean,after the removal of HoG, I don't get Philo Stone anymore. .__.
  • i jungle with her fairly often (she's one of the two junglers i play right now), and here's what i've been doing with her:

    exhaust + smite

    9/21/0

    marks: m.pen
    seals: flat armor
    glyphs: m.pen
    quints: flat hp5

    skill order is:
    w, q, e for the first three levels, then r > e > w > q

start machete + 5 health potions, then:
    philosopher's stone
    boots of speed
    sunfire cape
    haunting guise
    boots > sorc shoes

after that i change things up based on how the game's going. generally i upgrade philo into reverie, and then haunting guise into liandry's torment. i sell the machete when i need the slot, and i'll pick up a sightstone most of the time, but not always.

occasionally i'll do boots of mobility or some other boots2 option, but it depends pretty heavily on the other 9 champions.

most games i get by with blue buff, blue elixir, and kindle gem (i pick one up mid-game for reverie). if the game goes on and i get to itemize for more cdr, then i can ease up on the investments elsewhere.

runic bulwark and spirit visage are the most attractive, though abyssal can be great too if you have teammates that deal a lot of magic damage but aren't picking one up. since season 3 encourages piece-meal itemization for defense more heavily than season 2, you basically want to pick up a negatron cloak or double null-magic mantle when you need defense, and finish off the items when it makes sense—you don't have to upgrade everything right away.

eh, flat health quints aren't especially good—flat hp5 quints are generally better for jungler survivability (you regen the same amount of health in ~48 seconds) and you're only getting 7 extra damage total per northern winds at rank 1. anytime you clear the same camp twice (be it wraiths, wolves, etc) before healing up to full, you would have been better off with regen quints just because of the time you're spending out and about.

scaling cdr glyphs also aren't very good. i used to sometimes run them in season 2 along with the scaling cdr defensive mastery and the flat 4% from offense for ~20% cdr @ 18, but even then it was very questionable. flat cdr glyphs are just too good when you compare them side by side. cdr itself is an okay call, but flat > scaling here.

attack speed marks can be okay along with machete to give you a slight clearing speed boost in the early-game jungle, but giving up magic penetration is a pretty big deal.

The lack of reliable GP5 items for a jungler like her also made it harder, I find myself weaker cause I always make sure to give my laners the kill...

does anyone else agree? Reverie was such a good item on her...
reverie (as well as any of the other kindle gem upgrades) is still really good on her, and philosopher's stone is still a must-buy item for her, imo. sightstone also helps to cut down a bit on her expenses, and helps her counter jungle (or counter counter jungle) quite a bit. also, glacial shroud is still amazing for cdr.

the basic argument i use is this:
if you aren't dealing damage with sejuani, what exactly are you doing for your team?

damage should always be a priority for her, imo. her passive's slow isn't much to write home about (it functions as a marker, and doubles the damage from liandry's for free), so her basic abilities do two things: damage, and slow for 30/40/50/60/70% for 3 seconds.

if you agree with building her for damage, then it follows that items like sunfire cape and liandry's torment make sense to build—more magic damage and more magic penetration are good things. thornmail is pretty good now too, though only in certain match-ups. i don't agree with rushing liandry's (i always finish sunfire cape first to help with jungle clearing), but i do agree with building it if no one else on your team has it. she needs magic penetration though.

if you don't think damage is a priority for her, then that's a different discussion entirely.

i have an 'experimental' setup that uses ms quints because i think they're really good, but i just haven't convinced myself the drop in regen is always worth it. i also really want to get 21 utility to work, but it's so frail… but yeah, movement speed is good stuff.

xypherous has mentioned wanting to try a version of twin shadows that has more magic resist—if that works out, sejuani should be able to start working that into her build for a nice ms boost somewhere in mid-game.

well, that's kind of the 'trap' of sejuani. you need m.pen to make that health worth a serious amount of damage, but a lot of m.pen items are viewed as non-tank items so a lot of sejuani players end up dealing a lot less damage than they could be. amumu would be in the same boat, but his crazy-strong passive compensates for that a lot.

also, she has deceptively good ap ratios if you're going to commit to a fight. she has a 1.8 ap ratio on her basic abilities, and an additional 0.8 on the ult. while her kit doesn't allow you to build full ap, it does do a good job of converting what you do buy into damage. for comparison, if you look at rank 5 northern winds alone, 100 ability power gives the same damage boost as 500 health. if you add in her other two basic abilities, then 50 ability power gives the same damage as 500 health.

anyway, that's why haunting guise (and liandry's torment) is great on her—she loves all of its stats.

well, she has a health ratio on one ability (and it's total health, not bonus health)—i don't think that really makes her a 'health tank' more than it does shen or olaf—it's not her alpha and omega, she just gets a bit of a damage boost when she buys health items.

We aren't stupid. :P We are saying a health tank should get more total benefit from building health than AP.
well, i've never meant to talk about any stat in a vacuum (sorry if it came across that way), but yes sejuani should try to pick up health when she has the option. that was the intention, and that's totally the case as far as i'm concerned. she needs damage too though. if you look at the items i recommend for her as a core, they include sunfire and torment, and eventually reverie. all three are health items, and help sejuani do what she needs to: do all the heavy lifting so her teammates can clean up in fights.

the point i want to get across is that she can't do that very well with defense and cdr alone, imo. if that's all she's building, she's ignoring a core aspect of her identity.

I tried holding off asking this question for so long, but... >_<
there are a lot of little reasons. i made a post about it over a year ago that went over some of them, but basically it's because it just makes sense to me.

    3) i found out that in german all nouns are capitalized, and i appreciated the equal treatment given to a class of words.
    4) i had already switched my handwriting to an 'all caps' style because it was cleaner and easier to read, so it wasn't a big stretch to do something similar for typing.

also, i think at some point years ago, it might have bothered whattaybrian. at least, he claims the reason i don't capitalize was because of him. i don't remember him being a catalyst for change, but there may have been a point in time during which i enjoyed annoying him by not capitalizing things. it comes up now and again, like when (for no good reason!) a configuration file is case-sensitive and i have to go back and edit it a second time--he gets a kick out of it.

so, there you go! now you know some of the reasons.
