When we launched the Honor Initiative we saw an immediate drop in reports. Were happy with the results to date, and want to talk about some changes weve made that affect the way players earn crests. Before we get into these, wed like to share some pretty interesting stats that helped influence our decisions:
73% of Honor is awarded to players youve never played with before
Currently, about 1% of players have unlocked the Great Teamwork, Leader or Mentor crests, and 16% of players have unlocked the Honorable Opponent crest
Theres a 71% chance that a game will be positive if you meet a player whos unlocked the Great Teammate crest and an 80% chance if theyve unlocked the Great Leader crest
Based on these observations, we believe its a bit too difficult to earn a Great crest and too easy to earn Honorable Opponent. Although players who earn Honorable Opponent are generally more positive than those without crests, the numbers suggest that they havent been as positively impactful as those players with the other crests. With that in mind, weve made a few changes to the Honor Initiative:
Weve reduced the threshold for unlocking the Great Teamwork, Leader and Mentor crests, making them slightly easier to obtain
Some players will be granted new crests, since theyll now qualify under the new criteria
Weve increased the threshold required to unlock the Honorable Opponent crest, making it more difficult to obtain
Players who dont meet the new criteria for this crest will have to regain it
Well continue to iterate on the Honor Initiative as necessary, and then start working on the next phase of the feature.
I'm hardly seeing anyone giving out honor anymore. You guys need some kind of incentive, because I haven't seen much given out since release week of the system.
This is a tricky problem. What is the "right" amount of Honor to give out? For example, if players give Honors at a rate of 8 in every 10 games, but all 8 are to genuinely positive players... should we be adding incentives to push Honor gives to 10 out of 10 games? That doesn't quite make sense.
The player behavior team is pretty comfortable with the current rate that Honor is being handed out and we are seeing genuinely positive games when players with high Honor are in them. We'll keep an eye out on the usage and see if we can bump it here and there while still maintaining the positive effects of the system.
Also, players who are consistently positive in 2013 will get a few random surprises where cool things just happen--the Santa Baron icon was one of our first small experiments testing this concept and we've learned a lot that we'll apply to the next surprise. Perhaps, one of the surprises will be for players who correctly identify and Honor the most positive players in League of Legends...
I like all the changes, but I think you should add a feature to have all the crests, Since there's 4 corners you can put a crest on each corner. Or you could just have it to where you can switch out crests or see what crests you have unlocked.
We did try a few variations of this solution but felt it was too visually noisy and cluttered. We may investigate this more in the future, but are currently focused on optimizing the system and making sure that it's fun and motivating for a majority of players.
I have been playing more ranked (and love the new system btw), but I have gotten alot of teamwork a lot the past couple days idk how much but I am suprised I haven't gotten a teamwork ribbon.
Also a question on the system idk if you can answer of someone else. I am in Silver 1 and got to my promotion series really quick in like 8 games and won 2 straight then lost the last three
But now I have been bumping around with games where I am forced to support and can't do much because I try and give people what they want, but when I get a solo I always do really well and now when I get close I get clamped with what I gain. I won 4 straight last night after going win/loss/win/loss etc. But when I got to 89 I figured I would only need 1 more, but won and only gained 6.
So can you still get clamped in your LP gain even if you got to a promotion series and lost it.
Also the one I got +6 on I dominated Elise top as Yorick so I hope I only need one more win for my promotion series and hope it goes better.

The Great Teamwork, Great Leader and Great Mentor ribbons require combinations of Honor to unlock. For example, you need more than "Helpful" Honors to become a Great Mentor.
This is a cool change, but regardless of how "easy" it was to acquire the Honorable Opponent badge I know for a fact that I, as well as several friends of mine worked very hard to receive them only to have them taken away shortly after. I understand that mine is a small voice in a large crowd, but wouldn't it be prudent to at least allow players who have earned their badge already to keep them?
A core philosophy of the Honor Initiative is to create a system that encourages players to consistently be positive. If badges were permanent, players would be more inclined to cheat or abuse their way through the system to unlock the badges, then go back to their normal behaviors.
I have 19 friendly 17 helpful 107 teamwork 62 honorable oponent and i dont have any crest
The Honor counts in your profile are simply the total number of Honors you have received in League of Legends; however, Crests are awarded based on the quality of the Honors you receive and how consistently you receive Honor. For example, the highest value Honors are those from random strangers you meet in matchmaking.
I understand what he or she means though. I don't give out much honor anymore because people don't give it to me. I like to think i'm very polite in game, and if someone starts raging at me, i keep calm, don't react etc. I don't see myself as very toxic at all, but i never get honored. Your "honor becomes meaningless if you keep giving it out and never receive it" makes people hesitate to honor because they don't receive it themselves, which makes the circle halt even more.
Hm, where did you hear that last part?
Giving Honors in no way affects your own Honor status.
The concept of being "awarded" for good play, then having it taken away on a whim is what still gets me. I worked very hard for my honors, and I don't have a limitless amount of time to start over. I feel like you might as well take the initiative away because I can guarantee you that 99% of the people who lost their badges will lose all interest in the end.
If you earned a Crest, then lost it, you actually aren't far away from unlocking it again. Players never have to 'start over' unless they are banned by one of the player behavior systems in the game.
