I know it's sexier to think I have a bad game and nerf things, that there's some evil force with bad intent that makes nerfs you don't like, but it's not true. Hell, I can't convince the live team to nerf Anivia, my favorite champion. We're nerfing Xin - the character I just picked up because he's so strong.
Morello, out of curiosity, do you guys hire any pro players to give you input on balance changes? I can imagine it's difficult to keep up with the players' beliefs on balance, and Riot doesn't really have any professional LoL players behind balance changes, as far as I would know.
Many of the guys on the team are former top players, Classick, Statikk, LoveMyRMB, Scarizard, Jatt (before he shoutcasted) Roku - all >2000 elo.
They talk to our pro teams a lot too - but we keep the conflict of interest from determining our balance outright.

Or because hypothetical 800 elo players stomped you hypothetically with that champion in some game that I imagine happened, and will throw up as a straw man in this argument.

This. We have numerous people on the Live Design team who are very good players and even more that we work with on other teams in the company. In addition, we communicate with most of the pro teams across the world to get different perspectives on things. There's a lot of information gathering, analysis and discussion that goes into every change.
