update 2/25/2013: Griftrix and I played a game together! Head over to page 10 to see how things wrapped up.
Edit*: tl;dr? Don't like comics? here's a summary of my argument:

Despite bringing up the harsh base stats and ratios he has, I've only suggested one change, and that is to make his AOE damage separate from his shield. This isn't even a buff so much as a tweak to one ability that would infinitely improve his quality of life.
The only things this change would affect significantly are his initial jungle clear, his presence in teamfights, and his ability to 1 v 1 (which, in my opinion, is approximately abysmal at the moment because of the exact thing I'm suggesting we fix). I don't think a change of this nature would warrant a nerf at all. It's not making him overpowered in any way, it's just allowing him to not have to run for his life at earlier levels when his team isn't there to help him.

Please, Riot, give this a look. It's worth your time, it brings up intelligent points in a fun manner, it suggests a reasonable and relatively small change, and there are a lot of people who support it or at least something similar.
"Alright."

EERGH! How long must I auto blue for you? I'm needed in lane, I have minions to Q!
Sorry...
Why don't you do more damage at level 1? You're supposed to be a jungler, how can you possibly survive your first clear?!?
Sometimes I think this anchor just weighs me down...
No. No, I'm pretty sure it's your W, actually. Seriously, you just stop doing damage when your shield breaks.
...I must admit, my presence in early teamfights is painfully weak outside of crowd control...
Seriously, what kind of champion meant to catch spells with his face would have a finite shield on which a good portion of his early damage output depends on?
SQUAAAAKKKKK
They really ought to do some sort of quality of life improvement for your early game. I bet it would make you more viable.
Are you going to lane yet Veigar?
Oh for the love of Gragas, we have an Ashe on our team? Surrender at 20.
But what could they do to my kit to make me better?
...What if they separated the extra AOE damage from your shield?
How would they do that?
Hmmm....I've got it! They could make it so your riptide and shield are the same ability, then use riptide's old spot for the AOE damage. That way, one of your engage tools gives you extra protection, and your damage output is dependent on a timer rather than not taking damage yourself!
...That sounds complicated...
Fine, maybe they could just keep the shield and AOE damage on the same ability but let the AOE run on a timer instead.
Yeah, counterplay against nautilus is very easy. I know for a fact that if I ever played Udyr or Lee Sin or Shaco or potentially a variety of other junglers against him, I would have no problem taking out nautilus during his first clear. Since lanes seem to hate leaving lane really early because they want to get started on their farm, it kind of screws you over.
That being said, it's also fair to point out that other junglers (Rammus, Amumu, and actually Shaco) have the same sort of problem early on.
I totally agree here. If they invade well Naut has some problems. I will probably stop going warmog's as second item, and build either RoA or liandry's. The damage on liandry's is pretty insane on Nautilus, and helps me melt ADCs.
@Riot: Let's Talk Nautilus
