Syndra wants to obtain power, master her abilities and defeat Ionia. She despises people who try to control her because of what happened with her master. So why in the world would she join the League? The final line of her bio states:

Right, and the best way to do this is to join the League of Legends where the summoners shackle her, control her powers, and make her follow their orders on the fields of justice? What? How does that make any sense?
We are looking very seriously at our lore and background for our characters right now. Kitae would be more qualified than me to comment on the subject.
Lore is difficult, because the way we've approached it in the past has left some character stories in a state where we can't push them forward. We want the world of Valoran to be one in which we can tell many, many more stories.
I don't know why Syndra's in the league, but being captured does make sense.
Thank you for the honesty. I for one, enjoy all the backstory and lore even if it doesn't make sense. It's all good fun as far as i'm concerned.
I do too. When League started, the lore was thrown together piece by piece, with each champion added.
Now I think we're at a crossroads, where we need to decide what our world is and where it is going. Unfortunately, I don't know where that's going to be.
