Item Tier List - Jayce Generation

A lot of changes with AP items in the last few patch cycles. Tier list has been updated to reflect these changes :o

The Structure of the List

Similar to champions - items serve different purposes albeit on a much more varied scale.
So in accordance with this - I've decided to split the list up into five categories.

They will be:

Offensive Magical - This is for dealing increased magical damage or helping your team deal increased magic damage. It is not rated purely on damage and other effects of the item will be considered.
Defensive Magical - This is for negating magical damage or helping your team negate magic damage. It is not rated purely on the durability it gives you and other effects of the item will be considered.

Offensive Physical - This is for dealing increased physical damage or helping your team deal increased physical damage. It is not rated purely on damage and other effects of the item will be considered.
Defensive Physical - This is for negating physical damage or helping your team negate physical damage. It is not rated purely on the durability it gives you and other effects of the item will be considered.

Utility and Support - This is for items that help your team and generally contain items that do not excel in any one category but help you do things that items in the above tiers don't.

You'll understand the categories better once you've seen the list itself.
So on with the list.

The Item Tier List

Offensive Magical

Tier 1 - Rabadon's Deathcap, Void Staff, Deathfire Grasp, Zhonya's Hourglass, Abyssal Scepter, Lich Bane, Rod of Ages, Rylai's Crystal Scepter.
Tier 2 - Athene's Unholy GrailWill of the Ancients, Haunting Guise, Morello's Evil Tome, Archangel's Staff, Hextech Gunblade.
Tier 3 - Guinsoo's Rageblade, Malady, Wit's End, Moonflair Spellblade, Nashor's Tooth, Mejai's Soulstealer, Ionic Spark, Trinity Force.

Quick notes:

 - The Evil Tome has become a much better item to build due to its active. It provides a great tool to trade by helping partially counter champions like Swain and Vladimir. A mini-ignite on a 20 second cooldown is extremely useful in certain situations. It's been moved up to reflect this.
 - The Will of the Ancients nerf has made it weak enough that in my opinion, it provides a period of weakness while in the process of building it. It's become slightly less common for champions who don't rely on spell vamp. Eg. Brand and as a result has swapped places with Rylai's.
 - Athene's Unholy Grail is an interesting item. It combines a lot of stats that certain champions make extremely great use of. Eg. Galio/Swain and packages into one item. It provides great use through a teamfight and good damage output to boot. It's been placed high in tier 2 for this reason.
 -  I had Lich Bane a bit too high for the stats/cost efficiency/damage it gave so I've moved it down.

Defensive Magical

Tier 1 - Mercury's Treads, Warmog's Armor, Banshee's Veil, Force of Nature, Guardian Angel, Quicksilver Sash.
Tier 2 - Maw of Malmortius, Abyssal Scepter, Wit's End, Aegis of the Legion, Spirit Visage, Chalice of Harmony.
Tier 3 - Lich Bane, Leviathan.

Offensive Physical

Tier 1 - Infinity Edge, Phantom Dancer, Last Whisper, The Bloodthirster, The Black Cleaver, Maw of Malmortius, Atma's Impaler.
Tier 2 - Trinity Force, Wriggle's Lantern, Frozen Mallet, Youmuu's Ghostblade, Madred's Bloodrazor.
Tier 3 - Hextech Gunblade, Executioner's Calling, Ionic Spark, Manamune, Aegis of the Legion, Tiamat, Zeke's Herald, Cloak and Dagger, Guinsoo's Rageblade, Nashor's Tooth, Sword of the Occult.

Quick notes:

 - Moved up the Black Cleaver to better reflect its amazing damage output. However it is not as great when you have to switch targets. See here for the math.

Defensive Physical

Tier 1 - Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen, Ninja Tabi, Atma's Impaler, Warmog's Armor.
Tier 2 - Guardian Angel, Thornmail, Aegis of the Legion, Zhonya's Hourglass, Locket of the Iron Solari, Wriggle's Lantern.
Tier 3 - Sunfire Cape, Madred's Bloodrazor, Leviathan.

Utility/Support

God Tier - Vision Ward, Oracle's Elixir, Sight Ward.
Tier 1 - Shurelya's Reverie, Aegis of the Legion, Locket of the Iron Solari, Will of the Ancients.
Tier 2 - Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen, Zeke's Herald, Frozen Mallet, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, Abyssal Scepter.
Tier 3 - Wriggle's Lantern, Zhonya's Hourglass, Hextech Gunblade, Trinity Force, Executioner's Calling, Soul Shroud.

Final Words

A wide array of changes within the offensive magical category here to reflect the changes Riot has made in this category - they've brought up a lot of interesting options for build paths. The potential for counter-playing with items is higher though not as high as it should be. I believe they can further improve the itemisation paths in this game to bring a new level of play. Counter-playing in this game happens all too often only on a champion basis and should be  allowed to happen on items as well. Here's hoping that Riot sates our thirsts!

    please update.

When will you update the item tier list? Preseason? 21. December, the season 3?

I'm just throwing this out there-- maybe it would be better to divide the item tier lists by role rather than item type? This way, for example, you could have Atma's highly on the bruiser tier list and Infinity Edge highly on the ad carry tier list with less confusion. Just remember to throw in the reminder that such lists are for generic role builds and that some champs have wildly different build priorities (i.e. Trinity Force on Ezreal/Corki, Lich Bane on Fizz, Frozen Heart on Ryze.)

items are so situational that I think this list will be a detriment to newer players

Why is Maw of Malmortius so high?

Compare it to Hexdrinker. You are paying 1900 extra gold for 30 AD, 6 MR, and passives. I'd value 6 MR and the extra shield passive at 250g approx. this leaves you paying 1650g for 30 AD and 1AD per 2.5%hp missing. this is equivalent to a BF sword at 62.5% HP. Regardless, most AD Carries are usually near full health or dead, so this means that you are simply overpaying for damage.

I would much rather keep the Hexdrinker until I have filled my inventory.

Trinity Force is a far better item offensively, since it has several multiplicative stats and useful offensive passives.

Maw is a offensive item intended for bruisers, not carries. They tend to remain at low health for much longer then an AD carry, and Maw + Mercury Treads + MR/Level runes gives you a decent amount of MR while still giving you damage and 4 slots to fill with health, armor and more damage.

I think this is another example of why this tier list is particularly ill-conceived. It addresses player roles as a whole with each category for the sake of brevity when it's much more complicated then that. For example, for AP carries an actually useful Magical Defensive tier list would actually look more like:

Tier 1 - Mercury's Treads, Warmog's Armor, Banshee's Veil, Athene's Unholy GrailAbyssal Scepter, Rod of Ages (Wasn't even mentioned, but it Warmog's qualifies...), Rylai's Crystal Scepter (Ditto).
Tier 2 - Quicksilver Sash, Lich BaneGuardian Angel, Aegis of the Legion, Spirit Visage, Force of Nature.
Tier 3 - Maw of Malmortius, Leviathan, Wit's End.

Really, I think this tier list is way, way, way too general to be of any use to anyone.

Just a small opinion, but shouldn't Abyssal be ahead of Zhonya's in terms of dmg output? The MR reduction obviously makes spells do more dmg but in some cases, especially early game, some could debate that Abyssal can equal to dcap

I think it is good to make an item tierlist, but just leave out items such as Malady, Leviathan? (The HP snowball item) and put them in a tier like Evelynn (in her current state) USELESS TIER!

I don't agree about the placement of Lich Bane in this list. Most AP mages played competitively do not even consider Lich Bane as part of their builds as most of them spam their spells and hardly even auto attack. Deathfire Grasp also does not appear often in the competitve scene.

That said, these items are not necessarily terrible but rather they are good on specific champions much more so than others. For example, Fizz can build Lich Bane but one someone like Morgana, this would make no sense. If you build an item tier list, my suggestion would be to base it off of what an item gives to a team and how much it is used at the competitive level.

I can think about maybe 3 champs i´d concider to buy LB, you usually don´t have a time to use it, it´s same as Malady if you have right kit it´s good, othervise it´s useless.

Many items are highly situational (fe if you have multiple AA relian champions in a team, Zeke is moe and more viable option.

Warmog is only good on top/jungle champons and even if they´ll buld it and face someone like Malz or simply anyone with DFG it´s not that smart.

Those are only few examples to get to my point: every champion has several items he´ll buy in 99,9% of games and if he´ll even get far enought to buy more then his "core" he´ll be probably looking for something to counter enemy team... and this teir list won´t really help it (so enemy WW has madreds and that Veigar has DFG... better buy warmog, it´s top end tier item to deal wit magical dmg), so from this point it´s (sorry) kinda useless.

If it´s just sorted by gold-efficency to show what´s more or less good i this manner, it´s also useless, as Tier 1 are almost all most typpycal imes anyone will buy... why they are mostly mought items? Because they are best= are more gold efficient duh.

I generally like your posts so even from a post of a fan, it owuld be for a best (imo) to drop it and invest a time into mosething else (i really don´t mean it in a bad way i am acually trying to be supportive in my own way). If you really with to make item tiers, sort it by "classes" as this fact only switches items "worth" to a character quite a lot, most bruisers will probably buy warmog to counter incoming dmg but how many time have you see warmog on ashe or brand? Or Karthus with MoM? Ypou gt my point i hope

  • #4 TheFaller

Hence he has the item tier list divided into subgroups. Of course if you're playing with ashe, you're not gonna get a warmogs, but then again if you're with a ranged carry, you're not supposed to be looking at the defensive tier list, but rather the offencive one. If you're a Malphite, on the other hand, you understand that, if you're playing the tank role in your team, you'll see the defensive tier list and understand that for a particular type of defense i should prioritise X item over Y.

and as like any other kind of tier lists, they are to be taken with a grain of salt. Just because the items are at the top of the top in the tier, doesnt mean you should get them all at that order,(now picking ashe example, she shouldnt get an inf edge, PD, BT, LW, and then a black cleaver; even though BC is ranked 5th best offencive item, doesnt make sense having it when you have a LW, or when you already have enough DPS).  Just like in a champion tier list, sometimes comes in handy having one ranked T3 cause it can be used as a counter.

Resuming all this, a tier list works with the intend to give ppl a grasp of which stuff can help you win games in the current time, however it's not precisely mandatory to have all the top tier stuff, in which comes each person's reasoning to find whats best for the situation he's in.

Well that´s exactly my point. This list will tell you that Warmog is better def item then Bloodrazor (no shit), if you are new to a game you´ll probably have to go to check some guide to know which items and in what order you need to build, so where is a point? Ok i´ve red this list and asuming i´ve just started playing LoL i still don´t know what to build, overall grasp is nice but pretty useless thanks to already mentioned "class" problem. I just don´t see any usefull information to draw from this, i apretiate a thought and effort but it has to be more detailed to be helpfull.

Normally I like these kind of blog entries, but an item tier list is pretty pointless. Most items are highly situational and draw their power from combination with other items and/or champion abilities.

I'm not sure which audience you're targeting at with this list. A veteran player doesn't need a tier list, since he will always build to counter his lane and the opposing champion setup in general. A newbie needs a much more detailed guide explaining some general itemization strategies.
