I saw there isn't a thread like this!

I love reading / watching visual novels so I'd like to ask my fellow RoGers what VNs did you watch?

So far I've read these titles (and I would recommend them to you guys):

- Katawa Shoujo

- If my Heart had Wings

- Hoshizora no Memoria

I'm pretty sure I read couple of others but for the life of me I can't remember...

PS: starting Grisaia no Kajitsu today.

There's a fine line between 'visual novel', bishoujo and outright eroge. This line is not crossed on a regular enough basis.

I have no idea what any of these things are but I know I wouldn't enjoy them.

It's funny reading some comments from people that won't try them, because I used to think in a similar way (even about manga/anime)

I've gone through Muv-Luv and I'm plowing through Fate/Stay Night.

I don't suggest anybody get into VN's however. They're long and wordy and feature too much Japanese-ness.

I remember another thread on VNs. Though we aren't that many to read those.

I prefer story-oriented VNs, or VN with some gameplay in it. My own, biased, ~~tier~~ must-read list (all with english translation available, my japanese isn't nearly good enough to read Japanese with enough ease) :

1) F/SN. At first I didn't understand why so many people recommend it. First arc is a pain in the ass to read, generic and booooooring. Second one is really enjoyable if you aren't spoiled yet. Third arc justify by itself the pain to go through first arc. This is fucking awesome.

2) Umineko no naku koro ni. No H, no choices, just a story. But a really captivating one. That's thanks to this VN I started to get an interest in japanese culture. Can't say that much more, I know I'm totally biased on this one.

3) Sengoku Rance. Way more heavy on the H-stuff but a must play. The gameplay is surprisingly good for a VN and reward playing smart. You incarnate the biggest asshole in the whole history and that's fucking hilarious.

4) G-senjou no Maou. If you liked Death Note, you will like this VN. Really, really good story though side arcs don't bring anything interesting. That's the VN I recommend as an introduction to the VN world.

5) Aselia the eternal. Example of a VN which delivers both a solid story and an interesting gameplay. The sort-of-sequel (same developers but different studio) Yumina the Eternal is even better.

Others VNs that I consider are worth reading : Duel Savior (story way deeper than it seems at the begining), all others titles from Ryukishi07, Princess Waltz (some scenes are fucking awesome but overall it's not that special), Saya no Uta, Cross Channel.

I didn't read some "classics" yet, so that's why they don't appear on my list. Actually I'm on Romanesque, it's ... nice but not epic enough for my taste.

Way better than Crapp Spirit and definitely worth every penny ( especially non-steam version ). Also I like this new e-mote system.

The only VN I ever red was FSN, coz 2006 anime version was crap and I didn t get why people got so hyped about this. I went through the novel driven out by my curiosity, and felt a bit like N4gul : first arc is kinda ankward... I really don t like this route it s too naïve and conventional and I don t like Saber romance anyway so was ok but not sooo crazy. Second route however is just awesome : made me fan of the serie only by itself. It's full of pure mindblowing and epic contents, and I also love How each characters are so deeply characterised and complex (especially shiro who was just so flat in the first route). And well at last there is the Tohsaka arugument : best girl being main character = best route ^^. Couldn't start the third route as I was already very content with the second arc story, and as I know this route turns out being so sad and dramatic that I didn t even want to go through... :-(

Started Tsukihime wich I know is also great, but my version was so old fashionned and ugly that I kinda got tired of reading it.

If we're going over the blue border, I was very fond of the old classic 'Private Maid'. There's some NSFW content, but it's pretty much an afterthought at the very end of each of the character arcs.

But then, I read it when I was in a more romantic mindset, so perhaps it's not quite as compelling as I always thought it to be...
