Upcoming Rune Balance Changes

Upcoming Rune Balance Changes

The short version: we took a closer look at the rune system after our original announcement and decided that our plans weren't going to get runes where we want them to be. We're still committed to exploring the best way to make runes an interesting and dynamic system for all players, but in the meantime we'll be implementing some basic changes in the next patch.

For starters, we're very aware that rune costs are a pain point for many players, so with the upcoming rune balance changes, we'll be kicking off a 30% off Rune and IP Boost sale that will last from the start of the next patch through the end of April.

As for the balance, we'll be making the following basic changes to runes (we're only showing the Tier 3 changes, but you can assume roughly equivalent changes for the lower tiers). Supplementary changes in other systems will accompany our only two rune nerfs to armor seals and life steal quintessences. All other rune changes are buffs. It should also be noted that we will not be offering refunds (or meeting the price difference) for runes previously purchased or purchased between this announcement and the official sale start.

Damn - I thought I had all the runes I needed.

Are Riot really going to force me to stop buying champions and buy a whole new set of runes? And I only had 6 champions to go.

  • #57 ChemicalRemedy

They're out to get you, man

  • #59 cathartic2

They've succeeded. I've just spent all my saved IP on a set of scaling armour runes (only had flat before).

CDR and Attack speed quints will have to wait until after I own Kha'zix

WTF is is wrong with Riot this S4? They seem to be forcing the tanky meta all too often. First was the OP defensive mastery tree (now nerfed a little), and now they're giving a solid buff to scaling armor, mr and health runes. When this gets implemented I'll exclusively use tanky junglers throughout the rest of season 4 because the amount of scaling armor and mr gives as compared to flat armor and mr is roughly 3 times as much that more or less breakeven at around lvl 10/11.

If they really wanted to balance the runes they should've just standardized them to be either all flat or all scaling to lessen the disparity of the power curve players risk to take! Right now, from what I can certainly deduce, flat armor and mr will only give a minor advantage in the early game whilst scaling armor and mr will breakeven at mid game and will definitely be much better late game. As a result of this, APen and MPen will be a whole lot more valuable now. We'll see how this'll go but I already have plans of taking advantage of the tanky rune meta, once again, when this comes out.

With 9 scaling armor seals you will have less than 3 more armor at 18 than previously, plus the flat 4 but those are given to everyone so they don't really count. Same goes for mr, an increase of less than 3 at lvl 18. The break even point was always low, but at the same time those early levels were when the stats from runes mattered the most so people still ran flat stat runes most of the time.

So, woop-he-doo, 3 more armor and mr at lvl 18. Tanky meta enforced confirmed by riot.

Do your math again before you reply to my comment or I will slap you! -.-

edit: changed you're to your so I won't get slapped.

How exactly is my math wrong? I think the notes are very clear in stating new value and old value, 27 - 24.3 is quite obviously less than 3 armor/mr at level 18. That is not a lot, especially not on a tank. Sure, the difference between flat armor and scaling armor has increased by more, but that doesn't really mean anything since nobody ever used scaling armor seals previously. This is not enforcing scaling runes, it's balancing them. Also, since this was mainly done by nerfing flat runes (the buff to scaling armor/mr was quite small) it does just as much to open up for other runes such as health or mana regen. In no way are these changes enforcing a "tanky meta".

Also, sorry for doing this, but I kind of have to: Fix your grammar before you reply to my comment or I will slap you! -.-

I'd like to slap you right now for not knowing what "you're" means.

Seriously what's wrong with you people, you're and your aren't the same things.

The difference between flat armor (9) and scaling armor (27) is a whole 18 points. The new ones breaks even at lvl 6, earlier than I actually estimated. So the only advantage flat users have over scaling users will be between level 3-6 in most situations because most laners will wait until level 3 before an all-in scenario. Knowing that, who in their right mind (post rune changes) would even take flat over scaling anymore? I sure as hell wont! Also, the +4 armor to everyone is negligible when calculating for an advantage because whether you use flat or scaling runes you still get it.

sidenote: Sorry if I sounded arrogant with slap comment but that was for comical effect.

Well, since most lanes are decided at levels 1-6 a lot of ppl will still be using flat runes. Riot have even stated that they plan on having 6 be the standard break even point for runes. You need to understand that it's not the new scaling armor runes that are op, it's the old flat ones that were. At least that's how i see it, i suppose time will tell.

So, cooldown reduction is favourite for Riots? :) That buff.

  • #46 XXXCheckmate

Are people going to start playing Kog'Maw more for the armor shred now?

  • #45 Cobaltcords

Wow, awesome buff to fucking useless feast! That sure will help out the already-fucked-over marksman class! Fucking Riot.

  • #44 Basinator

Aside from  CDR HP seals seem to become pretty stronk.

  • #41 NicknameMy

I would also want to have a visual update at the rune section. Give pictures for every rune stat so you can also see which rune is which by seeing their icon. Like a Long Sword for AD or a Dagger for AS or something like that. If it is then /lvl, you could also add that into the picture.

  • #36 TreeBurrow

Marksman, drop that 1 AD Quint and grab an AS...

  • #39 brunkkkk

Maybe, or the Quint of Life Steal. A lot of player´s use them but this will change the comp, maybe more AS and less LS who know´s...

  • #42 TreeBurrow

Good point... After all, AS scales with the Doran's Blade Passive anyway, so they'll be getting a little more passive sustain... Not a huge amount though...

  • #33 brunkkkk

So now we will have a strong late game for tank´s (vs AD´s and a little vs AP´s)...

Maybe some nerf´s coming to the tanky top champions :s
