Death Note - first place by far.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - second place.
I've seen around 9 other anime, not worth mentioning imo next to these two, but i haven't give up on finding other good ones :)
Im a huge anime fan. So far Kill La Kill and Arpeggio of Blue Steel have been my favourites of this season still have to check out a few of the other big popular ones like Strike the Blood and Log Horizon.
One Piece Naruto Fairy Tail Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood to name a few are all great animes. However the one i love the most would have to be Sword Art Online. Great story and animation looking forward to the OVA on the 31st and hopefully they start Gun Gale sometime soon :)

There is a lot of different stylez in anime/manga altough i like -some- of the more typical ones like Full Metal Alchemist & Code Geass. The more artistic ones keep with more longer: samurai champloo / cowboy beebop / house of five leaves.
It's not japanese so it doest count I guess but I just finished watching the 2 first seasons of legend of korra, the nickelodeon-avatar follow up, while it's more meant for kids, I still love the humor and the cuteness. After that joyjoy I recently start to see the OVA of Hellsing again, this production time invested, in 10 episodes stuff like naturo gets 200 out, but u notice the difference in dialoge, storyarc, music and art.
I never saw an anime or manga that just goes on and on +100 episodes, I tried but the fillers, flat characters, obnoxious plot elements drive me crazy. This while other anime I liked very much just gets shut down in half the show because it doesnt get enough viewers; pumpkin scissors, blade of the immortal.
Definitely watch Sword Art Online, in my mind the most beautiful thing to happen to anime since Mr Miyazaki and his landscapes. Death Note is a must, Full Metal Alchemist is good but only turns great in combination with Brotherhood, with about 100 episodes that takes a bit of patience. Kill la Kill is trashy and amazing, the character animations are even funnier than those in Fairy Tail. And there is an awful lot of fanservice if that suits you. If you want something mellow, try K or Tempest, for something brainy Code Geass, for something obnoxiously long Bleach.

I've started my adventures with anime by watching Bleach and I still follow the manga. Other than that, I think that Death Note was absolutely awesome, probably the best anime I've ever watched. I always argue with a LoL friend of mine about whether the anime or manga is better - he insists that manga is a little more into Kira's thoughts, while I simply can't imagine experiencing Death Note without the awesome soundtrack. Else than that, I enjoyed FMA: Brotherhood, Code Geass, Sword Art Online and Elfen Lied a lot. I also feel like Angel Beats and Another also deserve an honorable mention. Lately though I've been extremely entertained by anime with a lot of comedy relief, namely Zero no Tsukaima, High School DxD (very much into the novels at the moment) and Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (can't wait to get my hands on an English translation for the novels). NouKome was also pretty funny.
I've seen a few people here on RoG keeping Katanagatari in high regards, but I personally don't like the animation style. The story is pretty good, but I can't force myself to watch it because of the way it's drawn. I'm stuck after 3 episodes.
As for Shingeki no Kyojin, I feel like the anime is pretty mediocre and overrated. I liked the 1st opening, but other than that I prefer the manga. I'm also a fan of Ao no Exorcist manga - the anime non-canon episodes were pretty terrible.
I've been a little lost in what to do with my life lately and this one anime called Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo hit me home pretty hard. It's a tale about a directionless student that's thrown into a dorm for special students after he refuses to part with his pet cat. He soon realizes his new dormmates are total weirdos, consisting of a talented playboy writer, a genius eccentric anime creator, a prodige hacker/coder, a world renowned painter turned mangaka with very little connection to planet Earth, and a teacher that gives fewer fucks than the average house cat. That's ok though, as our main character swears he'll make his stint a short one and escape the dorms of sakurasou shortly. Little does he know, he's in for a bit of an adventure.
This anime contains everything form teenage angst to mushy moe galore, heart wrenching romance to side-breaking laughter, and deep insight to goofing off with friends. If you're looking for a slice of life/romance/comedy mash-up, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou comes recommended from the heart. It's one of those anime that's an experience that'll leave you looking for other anime in the same genre just to replicate the feeling.
I haven't reviewed the above paragraphs at all as I wrote. I hope my mind is still somewhat coherent to you people. Enjoy!

Anyone looking for a killer psychological cop thriller? Loved the concept behind Minority Report? Want to see some kick ass anime Sci-Fi? Psycho-Pass delivers. I can't really give this anime a short blob that would do it any justice. Just watch it. You'll be hooked by the end of episode 1 if you dig yourself some tech-noir stylized police anime.
All this talk of great anime, and not one mention of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? Or Humanity Has Declined? Gatchaman Crowds from last season was pretty damn amazing too. My personal favorite shows would probably have to be Shin Sekai Yori, Scrapped Princess (surprisingly, an unrated Bones show), Birdy the Mighty: Decode, and Shiki. The stuff that others have mentioned is all pretty damn good too, though :D (Especially TheDevicer - Pyscho Pass is TOTALLY worth watching. Unsurprising, seeing as it was written by Gen Urobuchi). Also, there are a bunch of shows from this season that are really worth watching too - Kill La Kill, as was mentioned earlier, Kyousougiga, Samurai Flamenco, Galilei Donna (though the ending was a bit rushed)...
Gah, there's just too much great anime out there! I don't have the time to watch all of it. And then rewatch all of it, because it's just so damn good :P
Also, if any of you are ever looking for some good anime shorts, I would strongly suggest anything by Yasuhiro Yoshiura.
Ghost in the Shell is in my opinion the greatest anime ever made. Great smart stories(although sometimes they get a little pretentious), really great animation that still holds up well, and a really good dub if you prefer english voice acting.

Monster,Fullmetal,onepiece,and Gintama thats have been my Favourite Animes for a long time.
Honourable mention:Steins;gate,Baccano,Fate/zero,NHK and Guin saga. there is a lot more I like just not quite as much as these.

i use to read some VN's it's been awhile though, the last one i played was majikoi but my computer fried a month later so i lost it :(.
As for all time favorites, it changes each time for me but top 5 would be code geass, trigun, ergo proxy, nge, serial experiments lain

The Dawngate may close, but it will always live on.
